Human Sciences Student Spotlight: Dorrien Oliver

The Department of Human Sciences is proud to recognize fashion merchandising student Dorrien Oliver for an outstanding summer internship and research experience!

Dorrien participated in research focused on “Fiber H**p Field Evaluations and Exploring the Textile Options,” representing Tennessee State University’s Department of Human Sciences while collaborating with researchers at Delaware State University and other institutions.

His research explored the performance of industrial h**p cultivars and the potential of h**p as a sustainable fiber for the fashion and textile industry. The project examined plant height, chlorophyll measurements, fiber quality and comparisons between h**p and other textile fibers, including cotton and synthetic materials.

This experience is a great example of how Human Sciences connects fashion, agriculture, sustainability, science and innovation.

Congratulations, Dorrien! We are proud to see our students gaining hands-on research experience and exploring innovative solutions for the future of the textile and fashion industry.

Congratulations to TSUAg’s own Dr. Jason Oliver, Research Professor of Entomology at the TSU Nursery Research Center, on his distinguished national recognition from the National Plant Board for his significant contributions to regulatory plant protection.

Through decades of applied research and collaboration with regulatory partners, Dr. Oliver has helped advance pest mitigation and detection tools addressing nationally important invasive pests, including Japanese beetle, imported fire ant and emerald ash borer.

His research has contributed to more effective treatment strategies, reduced chemical use and improved detection tools that support growers, regulators and the nursery industry nationwide.

Congratulations, Dr. Oliver, on this well-deserved honor!

Kicking off the semester with service!

Students from our Service to Leadership Orientation classes and the College of Agriculture joined Drs. Tom Byl and De’Etra Young to volunteer with the Fish & Loaves Ministry at Downtown Presbyterian Church.

Each Saturday, the ministry provides a free hot meal, essential items, and connections to community resources for individuals in need. This weekend, our students helped serve 168 members of the Nashville community.

We are proud to see our students putting leadership into action and beginning the semester by giving back to the community.

Leadership begins with service.
