This summer, eleven higher education professionals from the American University of Iraq-Baghdad visited Vanderbilt Peabody College for a week of workshops, job shadowing and collaboration focused on learner-centered teaching, leadership and educator development. The visit marks another step in an ongoing partnership that has already helped launch new education programs and establish the Center for the Advancement of Higher Education in Iraq.

One of the longest-running studies of gifted students is reshaping how we think about education for all children. 📚🍎

The Study of Mathematically Precocious Youth (SMPY) has followed intellectually gifted students for more than 50 years, offering rare insight into how talent develops over a lifetime. After beginning with psychologist Julian Stanley, the study was brought to Vanderbilt University by Peabody College Dean Camilla Benbow and Professor David Lubinski, who continue to advance this groundbreaking research.

The findings reinforce several important lessons: innate ability is only part of the equation. Students thrive when their strengths are recognized, their interests are nurtured, and they're given opportunities to learn at a pace that matches their potential. Just as importantly, the research suggests these principles can benefit every learner and not just those identified as gifted.

This article offers a thoughtful look at what decades of research reveal about talent, achievement, and the role educators and families play in helping students reach their potential.
