The Cane River Reading Series will continue the tradition of bringing authors and poets to NSU by welcoming Chrissy Martin, assistant professor at Centenary and author of Whole Holy Hot, on Thursday, Sept. 3. The reading and question and answer session will take place in the Cammie G. Henry Research Center on the third floor of Watson Library at 6 p.m.

Children ages 9-12 can get an early start to their Halloween decorating at Painting for Kids, Tuesday, September 1st, from 6-7:30 PM at NPL's Main branch. Children can learn about art concepts such as perspective and portraiture as they paint a spooky, silly owl. Sign up is required, and children must be accompanied by an adult to stay for the program, so call 318-238-9222 or visit in person to register.

Every national park has stories happening behind the scenes, and people who help care for these places and connect us to them.

From rangers leading programs and answering questions to crews maintaining trails, scientists studying ecosystems, and staff caring for historic places and welcoming visitors, park employees do a lot of work that often happens out of sight.

Today, we’re taking a moment to recognize the people who help care for your national parks and make so many park experiences possible.

Join us for this special free program presented by Lt. Gov. Billy Nungesser and the Louisiana Division of the Arts, in partnership with the Louisiana Endowment for the Humanities, Shreveport Regional Arts Council, and Louisiana Public Broadcasting.

The presentation, Louisiana’s Gift to America: A Musical Legacy brings Louisiana’s rich and diverse musical traditions to center stage, celebrating the artists, communities, traditions, and cultural heritage that have influenced and shaped the sound of America, bringing together three distinctive Louisiana artists and musical forces:

A.J. Haynes - Lead vocalist of the Seratones

Few places have contributed more distinctive sounds to America’s musical story than Louisiana. Its rhythms, traditions, and cultural influences have traveled far beyond the state—from the infectious energy of zydeco and Cajun music to the soulful roots of jazz and swamp blues. For the nation’s 250th anniversary, Louisiana’s Gift to America will celebrate this extraordinary musical legacy through a vibrant, multidisciplinary performance that shines a light on the people, places, and traditions that have left an indelible mark on American music.

🕑 EVENT TIMES 6:00 - 8:00 - Doors open at 5:00pm, and the show will begin promptly at 6:00pm, guests are encouraged to arrive early. There are no tickets for this event, as this is a free event.
