We are pleased to award five ADVANCE English scholarships for the 2026-2027 academic year. The award recognizes promising English students and provides $1000 per semester that can be used toward tuition, fees, and other costs of attendance. This week, we are highlighting the recipients.

Spiro Roberts, from Baton Rouge, is a junior English major at NSU with a concentration in literature and passion for theater arts. His interests have led him to pursue an academic path that combines both literary analysis and art history. Raised by a lifelong artist and teacher mother and museum curator father, Spiro has chosen to follow in all four footsteps to pursue a career in either library archiving or artistic literary history preservation.

NSU Film Society will hold its first meeting and screening of the semester on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. in Kyser Hall, room 341. The meeting is open to all students.

Vie Green, of Kaplan, LA, is a first-year student majoring in English with an expected concentration in literature. Her main passion is writing poetry, but she also enjoys reading and analyzing literature. She’s always been focused on educating herself on things she may not understand very well. Some of her goals include publishing her own poetry and working with other writers to add a better understanding of literature into the world. She also intends to get her MA after she graduates.

Lilly Westfall was born in Natchitoches. She is currently a freshman at Northwestern State working towards an English literature degree. Her immediate goals are to publish in the school's cultural magazine (The Peacock) and work as an editor for the literary and art magazine (Argus). She hopes to one day work for a publishing company to help authors put their books out to the world.

Benjamin “Forest” Dodson, of Shreveport, LA, is a first-year English major with a concentration in Creative Writing. Ever since he was a child, Forest has loved entertaining others with words and stories. His goals this year include finding a place to publish his stories, as well as finishing his current work-in-progress western novel A Cowboy’s Burden. Forest plans to publish enough novels to give him and his loved ones a good life with no financial worries.

Congratulations to department faculty members Dr. Allison Rittmayer and Dr. Daniel Gordy on earning promotions. Rittmayer was promoted to full professor and Gordy is now an associate professor.
