Mason Gross Dance The Dance Department at Mason Gross fosters excellence at the intersection of dance performance, creative achievement and research inquiry.

Mason Gross Dance at Rutgers-New Brunswick aims to provide students with an exceptional education in equitable approaches to dance training, dance scholarship, and dance-making. An accomplished faculty of artist-scholars work closely with students, providing mentorship and expert instruction in dance techniques, somatic studies, performance, choreography, pedagogy and theoretical studies. The proximity of the Mason Gross School to New York City offers students opportunities for master classes and workshops in world dance forms with international artists.

Earlier this month, some of our freshmen and sophomore dancers performed at a homecoming event at the Rodkin Academic Success Center! Different departments shared projects that displayed student excellence — our dancers shared their expertise in creativity, movement communication, and in the moment decision-making by interpreting different improvisational scores. The students even had an opportunity to improvise to a score developed by our Chancellor, who provided prompts based on her own expertise in the study of psychology! 🧠 Performers: Lily Collins, Claudia DaSilva, Jake Fredericks, Alina Garcia, Abbey VanSyckel, Julia Hoffmaster, Amaya Redden, and January Warren 💕

From July 22–August 3, Mason Gross Dance and Music students and alumni took part in the inaugural Rutgers Global Afro-Brazilian Dance and Music summer program in Salvador, Brazil ✈️ Hosted by the Dance Department at the Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA), the program immersed participants in dance and music classes with UFBA faculty, complemented by cultural excursions throughout Salvador that deepened their engagement with the city’s rich artistic, historical, and cultural traditions.

Faculty co-leads Frederick Curry, Dance, and Dr. Marjoris Regus, Music, were thrilled to celebrate the launch of this new annual opportunity for our students 🩵 Of the program, Professor Curry says, “One of the themes that emerged consistently was how powerful participants found the intimate integration of dance and music throughout the experience. That interdisciplinary approach became one of the program’s defining strengths and contributed significantly to the depth of learning and cultural immersion.”

Great news! Megan Amen, a graduate of the BFA class of 2020 (who double-majored in Political Science!) has just begun a new job as the Policy Engagement and Advocacy Manager for the United Service Organization. She previously worked on Capitol Hill as a Legislative Assistant and Executive Assistant before making the jump to this new role! It’s so cool to see where Mason Gross graduates can take their career. We wish her the very best ❣️ Congratulations, Megan!
