The Boggs Center is New Jersey’s federally designated University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program. The Boggs Center on Disability and Human Development is a division of the Department of Pediatrics and a Community Health Program of Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and part of

a national network of UCEDD and LEND programs. Since its inception in 1983, the Center has emphasized a community-based, lifespan approach to meeting the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, and is dedicated to promoting independence, productivity, and full inclusion. The Boggs Center provides community and student training and technical assistance, conducts research, and disseminates information and educational materials relevant to the developmental disabilities community.

Margaret Gilbride, JD, CT, Director of Transition, Employment, and Aging & Disability at The Boggs Center, was honored with the Rebecca McDonald Award for Chapter Leader at the 2026 National APSE Conference on Thursday, June 11th in Dallas, TX. The award is presented to an APSE (Association of People Supporting Employment First) Chapter Leader who demonstrates exceptional leadership, tireless volunteerism, and extraordinary commitment to the mission and vision of APSE within their state chapter. Established in 1988, APSE is the only national organization to focus exclusively on inclusive employment and career advancement opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Margaret has been involved with APSE is various capacities, both nationally and at the state level, since 1991. She served as President of the NJ APSE Board of Directors from 2019-2021 and as President of the APSE National Board of Directors from 2020-2022.

The Boggs Center’s Philip Smith, PhD, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics, and Melissa Cheplic, MPH, NADD-CC, DrPH(c), Senior Training & Consultation Specialist, will present at an upcoming Inclusive Mental Health Symposium. Coordinated by the Nutley Family Service Bureau, the free virtual symposium will be held on June 18th from 9:15am-5:15pm, and feature sessions presented by subject matter experts on topics related to transforming care and mental health practices for people with disabilities. Dr. Smith will share his expertise on autism and co-occurring anxiety disorders, and Ms. Cheplic will present about creating accessible and inclusive clinical settings.

The Boggs Center is partnering with the Burlington County Library System to host “Summer for Everyone,” a free, inclusive community celebration to launch the 2026 Summer at the Library on Saturday, June 20th from 11am to 3pm at the Burlington County Library in Westampton.

The event will transform the library into a welcoming community gathering space for all, with accessible activities, entertainment, community resources, and opportunities to connect. No registration is required.

Boggs Center faculty and staff presented at the 14th annual Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Department of Pediatrics Research Day on Wednesday, May 13th. Manuel Jimenez, MD, MS, FAAP, The Boggs Center’s Director of Research, delivered a podium presentation entitled “A 3-arm Effectiveness-Implementation Hybrid Type I Randomized Trial Comparing Strategies to Enhance Reach Out and Read.” Carrie Coffield, PhD, Co-Director of The Boggs Center and Director of NJLEND, presented a poster on teaching about disability through the lens of family-centered care. Regina Fassano, PhD, Research Associate, shared a poster that examined the association between clinical modeling during Reach Out and Read and enhanced caregiver-clinician relationships among Latino families.
