“Hawaii is often seen as being behind the rest of the country, but maybe, in some ways, everyone else was just too fast,” said Dr. Ray Cho, project coordinator at the Center for Gambling Studies. “So, my goal is to help clarify how Hawaii could approach this issue in ways many other states never got a chance to. In that way, Hawaii can think more carefully before major policy decisions take shape. If we want to get this right, here’s what you’re probably going to want to know: what other jurisdictions learned the hard way, what Hawaii still controls, what thoughtful policy requires from the start, what protections are needed, and what Hawaii could do differently.”

From direct practice to Capitol Hill, alum Lily Antonowicz is proving that social workers belong wherever policy is being shaped.

Now serving as a legislative assistant advising on health and labor policy, Lily credits the MSW program's Management & Policy specialization with preparing her to bring empathy, advocacy, and community-centered thinking into policymaking.

“Social workers are policymakers. Those things are not mutually exclusive. They’re actually quite connected.”
