Young people are often willing to step up when they encounter firearm-related dangers, but they need the right tools to do so safely.

New research from Distinguished Professor Victoria Banyard found that nearly three-quarters of young people who witnessed or became aware of a gun-related danger tried to help. Yet many felt their actions had little impact, highlighting the need for prevention programs that give young people a broader range of safe, situation-specific strategies.

“People are ready and willing to try to do something,” Banyard says. “But we haven’t really fully explained what may be most effective in dangerous situations.”
