Each spring, the Aresty Research Center hosts a university-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium. A celebration of scholarship and creative activity, the Symposium is a chance for undergraduates to present a paper or poster on their findings to an audience of faculty, peers, and corporate and community partners.

The research presentations at the Symposium range across the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and arts. This unique event, which is one of the largest undergraduate research celebrations in the country, is a rare opportunity to engage with some of the most exciting research at Rutgers all in one place.

This year, the Aresty Undergraduate Research Symposium will be a virtual event to address the current environment and ensure the safety of our students, faculty, and people who would normally attend this event.

Please join us on Friday, April 30th from 11:00AM-12:00PM via Zoom. Registration is required to attend this event. Please follow this link to register: https://rutgers.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJMvfuCoqDsiE9ykO2ECzCGPCqAU5YYbi87j

We are happy to announce we are now accepting applications for the 2021-2022 Aresty Research Assistant Program.
Applications are due on April 16, 2021.

The Aresty Research Assistant (RA) Program enables students to gain their first authentic research experiences by supporting faculty research projects during the academic year. RAs learn valuable research skills by working side by side with professors on forefront research projects, while professors benefit from a structured program to recruit and train the next generation of researchers. Students selected for the program do five hours of research per week (or more by arrangement with their professor). Selected students also attend peer group meetings with other undergraduate researchers to practice scholarly communication, explore research ethics, design posters, and discuss research methodology.

Please visit aresty.rutgers.edu/node/132 for more information on how to apply.

We are pleased to announce we are now accepting applications for 2021-2022 Aresty Peer Instructors.

Aresty Peer Instructors (P*s) serve as a resource and program guide for participants in the Aresty Research Assistant Program. In this capacity, Aresty P*s help recruit and advise Aresty Research Assistants (RAs), share information about academic and other campus resources, serve as a liaison between student researchers and faculty mentors, and plan programs for and facilitate seminars for their peer group. They may be asked to help with presentations about the Aresty Research Center, and will work as ambassadors at the annual Undergraduate Research Symposium.

This past fall semester, the community service committee chartered a project to bring kindness and good-spirits to the homes of the elderly community; all while maintaining social distance. With the elderly among the most susceptible to the illness, loneliness has become a severe consequence of isolation forced up us by the COVID-19 pandemic. Love For Our Elders (LFOE) is a non-profit organization that facilitates the delivery of handwritten letters to the elderly in nursing homes and assisted livings. LFOE accepts generalized, yet thoughtful, handwritten letters that are written to lift the spirits of anyone in need of a boost.

This past November, the Aresty community service committee held an hour-long drop-in session over Zoom. During this meeting, students affiliated with Aresty collected inspiration and brainstormed topics to incorporate into hand-written letters. A common theme of 'change' arose –– be it the seasonal changes of weather or broader changes in circumstances. Each student who contributed one or more letters then took the time to stop by their local post office and mail their letter to the LFOE headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio.

“I’m very proud of the committee’s dedication to creating opportunities for Aresty students to help the greater community,” says Sam Friedman, senior peer instructor and chair of the community service committee. “We are taking in a lot of positive feedback and are going to push to hold more letter-writing sessions and expand into more areas of service that are just as safe and accessible for anyone who wishes to contribute.”

The Aresty community service committee looks forward to continuing with this service activity throughout the Spring semester and is looking into growing this endeavor to include more of the Rutgers community in the next academic year.
