October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, something that has impacted those we love knowingly and unknowingly.

1 in 4 women and 1 in 7 men will experience Domestic Violence and only a few will report it. It's up to us to be a safe haven for survivors to confide in and you can help with these steps:

1. LISTEN - pick a safe place and time your loved one feels comfortable with and let them know you believe them.

2. OFFER SUPPORT - Let them know they're not alone and that their feelings are valid. Ask what they need to feel supported.

3. PROVIDE RESOURCES - Resources like thehotline.org are crucial. Help find local resources as well here https://www.thehotline.org/get-help/local-resources/

4. HELP MAKE A SAFETY PLAN - Safety plans should cover what to do when there's a fight, having a list of resources and numbers handy, having a getaway bag ready with money and supplies, what to do with children and how to prepare them and how to let your family and coworkers know what you're dealing with: https://www.thehotline.org/create-a-safety-plan/

5. RESPECT THEIR CHOICES - Leaving an abusive relationship is difficult and not everyone has the strength to do it right away. Let your loved one know you respect their decision and you're there to support them no matter what.
