RU COOL Rutgers University Center for Ocean Observing Leadership. Researching bio-physical processes of coastal waters off New Jersey and around the World.

The Coastal Ocean Observation Lab (COOL) at Rutgers University is part of the Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences. The lab was established in October 1992 by Dr. Scott M. Glenn as the Marine Remote Sensing lab, and has since grown to include several faculty, over a dozen research staff members and countless graduate and undergraduate students.

Occasionally we get small groups of surprise visitors for a tour of RUCOOL. This week that surprise was a group of ninety 3rd graders from Newark that visited and got a quick tour from Ashley and Becca!

Down at Palmer Station, Antarctica, our team recovered the RU26 glider on March 26th. This team included Mya Sharpe, Abby Tomita, and Palmer support staff, George Silva, Morgan Cassey, and Noah Vogel, assisted by our RUCOOL field team, Frank McQuarrie and Brian Buckingham back in NJ. RU26 had spent 55 days on her mission, and travelled over 900 km, avoiding any whale attacks. Recovery was smooth. The next tasks were offloading the data and sending it home safely (not to mention sending the crew home to the state safely!).

Rutgers has been involved with research at Palmer Station, Antarctica, for over 30 years. This winter (their summer), we had a crew down there working with a researching changes in the coastal ocean off Antarctica (see map). Back on January 30th, Mya Sharpe, Abby Tomita, and Shavonna Bent (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute), assisted by our RUCOOL field team back in NJ, Nicole Waite, deployed glider RU26. It’s COLD (notice the survival suits), but they clearly enjoy their research. This work was funded by the National Science Foundation. Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences

Several of our grad students had a blast leading science activities at the McKinley Community Family Night in New Brunswick, NJ earlier this month!

Families rotated in and out of our various demonstration stations, exploring how our gliders work, learning how microplastics end up in the ocean, and racing makeshift plankton!

Thank you to McKinley Community School for welcoming us!

Our DMCS Grad Students led the way at Rutgers Day this past Saturday. Despite the rain, we had a load of visitors learning all about the plethora of oceanography research being performed here at Rutgers. A great day!
