Meteorology and Atmospheric Science (Rutgers)

Meteorology and Atmospheric Science (Rutgers) We offer a B.S. degree in meteorology and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in atmospheric science. This program meets all the U.S.

Meteorology is the study of weather and climate, of the characteristics, structure, and processes of the atmosphere. Students learn how to forecast the weather and how to understand climate change. The emphasis of the Bachelor of Science degree program is on developing a broad understanding of the fundamental physical and dynamic processes governing the motions and behavior of the atmosphere, and

its interactions with the underlying land and ocean surfaces. Basic courses in chemistry, physics, and mathematics are the prerequisite foundation on which the meteorology program is built. Students who wish to pursue an undergraduate meteorology degree should have a strong high school or equivalent background in mathematics and the sciences prior to enrollment. federal government civil service requirements for classification as a meteorologist and the American Meteorological Society recommendations for undergraduate meteorology programs. We are pleased to announce the establishment of a WeatherWatcher Living-Learning Community starting Fall, 2009. Located in Perry Hall, the closest dormitory to our Environmental Sciences Building, on the Cook Campus, a pastoral paradise, the WeatherWatcher Living-Learning Community offers special benefits to its student residents interested in the weather and climate, who want to learn about broadcast communications. Community members have the opportunity to work and learn in the field while living with students who share common interests. A professional television studio, located right on the floor, facilitates the production of twice-daily weather forecasts airing on the Rutgers University Television Network. Atmospheric science is a relatively broad discipline that involves the diagnosis and prediction of atmospheric processes, including climate change, atmospheric radiation, large-scale weather systems, severe storms, and air-sea interactions. The program faculty conducts research on each of these topics, with a particular focus on developing an integrated understanding of climate dynamics, including climate processes from global to regional scales and climate-chemistry-aerosol interactions. Basic and applied research problems are addressed through observation, modeling, and applications. The program is associated with the Center for Environmental Prediction, which facilitates interdisciplinary research, education, and outreach in environmental modeling and includes faculty from the departments of environmental science, geography, geological sciences, and marine science. The program is also associated with the Office of the New Jersey State Climatologist, which collects and archives climate data, conducts research pertaining to New Jersey climate, and provides climate education and information to the citizens of New Jersey. We actively collaborate with two neighboring climate research facilities, the NOAA Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory, 15 miles away in Princeton, New Jersey, and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Physics, in New York City. In addition, make use of the extensive computational, observational, and scientific resources of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, in Boulder, Colorado. Page Policy:

(Yes, we know the photo is wrong, but they haven't fixed it yet!) This fund supports the AMS alumni/student dinner, travel to AMS, and maintenance of the Perry Hall studio.

Gifts to this fund help students learn how to forecast the weather and how to understand climate change.…

Did you know that the meteorology program was once part of a combined program in meteorology and physical oceanography? Alumnus Brendon Hoch recently passed along these photos from the 1980s. Anyone recognize the fellow standing with his left hand on his hip and looking over the shoulder of one of the guys on the terminals? (Hint: He is currently one of our faculty members!)
