Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences

Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences Rutgers SEBS has its roots in science-based agricultural education. Page Policy:

We want you to share information, ideas, and opinions on this fan page.

Today the school has evolved into a center of teaching and research covering “organisms to ecosystems.” In line with Rutgers University's strong land-grant tradition, faculty members from the school pursue mission-based teaching, research, and outreach that address real-world problems, and encourage students to adopt the same mission-based approach to their educational experience at Rutgers. The s

chool's undergraduate programs are designed to promote the multidisciplinary study of challenges facing society in areas that cover the biological spectrum from organisms to ecosystems, with an equal emphasis on the social and human dimensions of these challenges. Twenty-five bachelor's degree programs, many with areas of further concentration, are available to the school's undergraduates. Often, teaching, research, and outreach are done in collaboration with faculty members from various departments, centers, and institutes from throughout the university and beyond. The school's students not only have access to quality classroom experiences, but also the opportunity to participate with faculty in world-class research projects funded by agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the United States Department of Agriculture. They also have the opportunity to work with faculty of the New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station throughout the state to apply Rutgers' research to address local needs. What are the grand challenges of our society today? And how do we propose solutions for these challenges that are both scientifically sound and democratically legitimate?

Grad students from SEBS, SAS, SOE, and Bloustein convened earlier this month at the Civic Innovation Workshop to answer these questions and more!

Together, they …
✅ were introduced to convergence research, a process designed to tackle grand societal challenges by brainstorming solutions that could ONLY be created by working together,
✅ learned of Rutgers projects that focus on convergence research, and
✅ banded together to figure out how they could work together to jumpstart their own convergence research journeys.

👏 Special thanks to Dr. Kay Bidle (Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences), Dr. Kasia Klasa (Department of Human Ecology), Dr. Tracy Anthony (Department of Nutritional Sciences), Dr. Maria Gomez-Jenkins (Rutgers Cancer Institute), and the Rutgers Democracy Lab.

This event was hosted by the SEBS Office of Research, in partnership with the Rutgers Democracy Lab. This was a Solving Grand Challenges Month event.
