“Living and working in a developing country also pushed me outside of my comfort zone. Limited resources meant we had to rely heavily on physical exam skills, creativity, and teamwork rather than advanced diagnostics. I learned to be resourceful, culturally aware, and flexible—qualities that will be essential in my future career. Studying abroad reinforced my passion for veterinary medicine and showed me how impactful compassionate, accessible care can be on both animals and their communities.” (2/2)

Deanna Gaspard shares what her study abroad experience was really like through the “Winter: CELA Belize” program:

“One of the most memorable and challenging experiences during my time in Belize took place at a spay-and-neuter clinic in a rural community. The clinic was fast-paced, and many animals were brought in by owners with limited access to transportation or financial resources. At one point, a post-operative patient was transported improperly after surgery and returned in critical condition. Despite efforts to stabilize the animal, euthanasia was ultimately necessary.

That experience was difficult, but it deeply impacted me. It highlighted the importance of client education, clear communication, and understanding the socioeconomic realities that influence animal care decisions. In that moment, I realized veterinary medicine is not just about technical skill; it is about empathy, adaptability, and meeting clients where they are.” (1/2)

Rutgers University welcomed our new international students on August 25 at Jersey Mike's Arena for the kick-off of International Student Orientation. This multi-day event is designed to set up undergraduate and graduate students for success--both academically and socially. Our new students were treated to dragon dancers, the Scarlet Knight, a resource fair, and welcome remarks by Rutgers-New Brunswick Provost Jason Geary. Check out photos from the event!
