Department of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies, Rutgers University Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has a rich history at Rutgers University. program and 21 students in the M.A. program.

Inaugurated as a department in 2001, it has become one of the strongest interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate programs in the United States. Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies has grown from offering a few courses at the University in 1973 to currently enrolling 184 undergraduates in major and minor degree programs, 33 students in the Ph.D. Department faculty include 31 core, 102 gradua

te, and 70 affiliate members whose expertise in women's and gender studies is enriched by specializations in the arts, anthropology, philosophy, sociology, political science, and comparative literatures in English, French, and Spanish.

The WGSS Department is thrilled to host Made to Measure, our first graduate conference in several years! Please join us April 2-3, 2026 for a two-day conference gathered around the theme of measurement - as it is deployed with and against colonial, imperial, and capitalist desires, in regimes of order and valuation always haunted by their excesses. Along will several panels featuring the work of graduate and undergraduate students, Made to Measure also presents a keynote address by Dr. Manu Karuka and hands-on crafting workshop by Dr. Brittney Cooper of the Race and Gender Equity (RAGE) Lab.

Join the Global 16 Days Campaign Against Gender-Based Violence at Rutgers University for a virtual panel on Gender Apartheid, a form of governance facilitating the systematic oppression and segregation of women, girls, and members of the LGBT+/nonbinary community. 
 
The conversation, moderated by Melissa Upreti, will feature Bahar Ghandehari, Moni Rani Das, and Lisa Davis, experts in their fields who are actively engaged in exposing and advocating against gender apartheid in a range of contexts, including: 
 
🟣the state-sanctioned targeting of cis-women and girls in Afghanistan and Iran; 
🟡the institutionalized, systemic dehumanization of women and girls stemming from caste-based oppression in South Asia; and
🔴 the brutal repression of the LGBT+/non-binary community.
