Signed into federal law via the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 17, 2021, Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 when the last enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It signifies both the end of slavery and a pivotal moment in the ongoing pursuit of freedom, justice, and equality in America.
