This Pride Month, the Rutgers Animal Welfare Judging Team celebrates love, inclusion, & compassion — for people and animals alike 🏳️‍🌈

Animal welfare is rooted in empathy, respect, and creating a world where every living being is treated with dignity. We’re proud to support a community where everyone belongs and can show up as their authentic selves!

Love is love. Kindness has no boundaries 💜

It is both my favorite and least favorite day of the year, graduation. I consider myself so lucky to watch these students grow from new, timid students to confident, close-knit, forever friends. As much as I wish I could just keep them around forever, I am so excited to see what these two will do post-Rutgers!

will be attending University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in the fall. And will continue working at her vet clinic before applying for vet school this summer. I can’t wait to see all the amazing things they do!

It is never goodbye on this team. It’s just until the next big thing we have to tell each other or funny joke to send in the group chat, but I will miss seeing you both at practice each week. Thankfully it was so hot today I have no more water left to give to tears 😅😭

Welfare team forever 💚

☆ ALUMNI ALERT ☆

Angely Morocho is a proud alum of the Rutgers Welfare Judging Team and was an integral member of some of our original teams! Keep reading to hear all about what she’s done post Rutgers and how our team has helped her 🐄🐄

“Almost through year one. From twelve lectures a week to stinky GI labs and slippery clinical skills, it’s been a ride. Moved to Glassboro with my partner, got a scholarship, and founded the first ever Student Chapter of the American College of Animal Welfare—we’ll be competing in welfare assessments soon. Through it all, we still find time for themed parties and chili nights. Couldn’t ask for a better year. Excited for the summer as I’ll be part of the Inaugural Veterinary Summer Scholars Program at SSVM. Missing the Rutgers Welfare Judging Team and working on bringing a piece of it here at SSVM.”

We couldn’t be prouder and love our welfare family, both past and present 💗

What is AWJAC? 🐾👀

The Animal Welfare Judging & Assessment Contest teaches students how to critically and objectively evaluate animal welfare using science-based evidence 🧬✍️

This mock hamster scenario is one of many practice cases where we analyze housing, enrichment, and care to determine which setup best meets an animal’s needs. Because welfare matters at every scale 🐹✨
