>30 years ago the work on lipid formulations that led to this paper was largely what was repsonsible for the formulations of our mRNA COVID vaccines. I was a postdoc in a liposome
lab up the road from where the work was done, and even before the paper came out some people in our lab were excitedly trying things out with lipids supplied by Felgner et al. It took that >30 years of hard work largely by hundreds of government-funded scientists and researchers in industry to get to where we are now. Additionally, decades of work in the RNA design and stabilization field by more scientists was required. Without the slow steady march of science funded by the government and industry, we would not have been prepared for the pandemic.
