This Thursday, we will be co-sponsoring a monthly journal club discussion on Ocean Iron Fertilization!

Our very own and Austin will lead a discussion on the topic of iron fertilization and how to pick the most relevant scientific info to create a concise policy memo for policy makers. Give the article โ€œSouthern Ocean Iron Fertilization: An Argument Against Commercialization but for Continued Research Amidst Lingering Uncertaintyโ€ by Tyler Rohr a quick read before the meeting.

Meeting link is in our bio!

Congratulations to graduate student Liza Wright-Fairbanks on her recent publication looking at carbonate chemistry in the Mid-Atlantic Bight using gliders!! She did a great job in her work and her paper was recently featured in an Eos research spotlight (https://doi.org/10.1029/2020EO151558)!! We highly recommend reading her article and checking out the spotlight on her job very well done. Way to go Liza!!!

Hello all!!! Get ready because itโ€™s time for another Super Spectacular Student Spotlight! ๐Ÿ’ก

Graduate student Janine here is hard at work in the lab/field despite everything! And happy to be doing so! In fact, Janine has a special message she wanted to share:

โ€œHi everyone! Iโ€™m studying the environmental benefits oyster farms provide to our coastal waters. With COVID, my field work has been slightly delayed, but I was able to get out in the field last week to collect my first day of data. As our new normal unfolds, Iโ€™m optimistic I will be able to continue to conduct fieldwork, but the safety of the farmers we collaborate with is the most important thing. If another wave of COVID hits the New Jersey area, my research may be put on hold, but we take things day by day and hope for the best!โ€

Weโ€™re all hoping with you Janine! Good luck with your research and keep on rockinโ€™!

Our GSA is on a mission to make our university greener, starting with our own department! Come out to the SPAR Meta-review working session this Saturday to dig in to some of the issues that impact our department such as composting, and hopefully we can wield this knowledge to enact change at the building, University, and state-wide level.

Good luck to the newly-minted Dr. Fernando Pareja who started his new post-doc position today at the Steven's Insititute of Technology! He'll be applying civil and ocean engineering to study geomorphic change and storm risk in New York harbor. ๐ŸŒŠโšก๐ŸŒ€

Before he left for this new adventure, he was kind enough to answer some of our silly questions (never knew that he was a watch enthusiast!):

If you had to study something completely different, or pick any career outside of science, what would it be? ๐Ÿ“•๐ŸŽฅ๐ŸŽบ
A/ I would pick History (Art History, Military History), Maritime Studies, Nautical Archaeology, or some field of study related to archives or restoration. I really enjoy everything old school and vintage from movies to art and books.

What did you learn most recently?โŒš๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿธ

A/ In the movie Goldfinger (1964), James Bond appears to be wearing a Rolex Submariner watch with a certain kind of strap called the โ€œNatoโ€. Some people then refer to it as the โ€œBond Natoโ€ --but theyโ€™re wrong because the movie was released seven years before the British introduced the Nato strap (and yeah, I know a lot about watches!)

What interests you most about your research/oceanography? ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŠ
A/ Iโ€™m more of a problem solver than an explorer. I like studying peopleโ€™s daily interaction with the ocean and how it has evolved over time. Then I combine that knowledge with hydrodynamics to figure out novel ways to protect people and property from storms and floods.

As we dive in to another year of school work, it helps to keep one eye on the light at end of the tunnel!

Dr. Brittany Schieler is one of our most recent graduates and is killin' it in Washington D.C. as an intern at
ASLO (Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography) and will be starting a prestigious Knauss fellowship next year! In the midst of her impressive work, she took the time to answer some of our silly questions:
If you had to study something completely different, or pick any career outside of science, what would it be?
If I was better at writing jokes, I would definitely be a stand-up comic! Haha but in all seriousness, I would want to study a more tropical ecosystem. The North Atlantic is beautiful, but I thrive in the sunshine.
How do you spend your free time? ๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿณ๐Ÿ–
Right now I spend most of my time that I am not working being a mommy to my adorable 7 month old* daughter, Emma! I suspect at some point I will have time for hobbies again. ๐Ÿ‘ถ

*sorry, she's totally older than 7 months at the time of this posting ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™€๏ธ
