Dr. Ricardo Nuila, author of this year's Honors College Common Read, came today to speak with Honors College students about the healthcare issues explored in his book, "The People's Hospital: Hope and Peril in American Medicine." Dr. Nuila and Honors College Faculty Fellow Dr. Humberto Jimenez, Clinical Associate Professor at the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy, were introduced by Dean Bowers of the Honors College ahead of their conversation. Students then joined in, asking their questions and getting their books signed. The Honors College Common Read is part of our Honors Unbound two-year exploration of modern medicine: the quest for cures—and the ethical dilemmas. Dean Bowers shared our mission and the opportunities ahead. Dean Klein and student mentors shared thoughts on life in college and the Honors College community experience—Inspired. Empowered. Welcome to campus, Honors College Class of 2030! Today is move-in day for first-year HC students all across Rutgers–New Brunswick as well as HC 101 Welcome for Commuters and Extended Community. We can't wait to celebrate with you during Welcome Week!

Today, we're also introducing Honors College Welcome Team member Fhameda Sultan ('27, RBS/HC)! Fhameda is an Honors College student majoring in supply chain management and minoring in health administration, with aspirations of working at the intersection of business, healthcare operations, and innovation. In addition to serving as an Honors Community Mentor at the Honors College, Fhameda is a Douglass Residential College student and has interned at Johnson & Johnson in the medical technology sector. She also works in the laboratory at St. Joseph’s University Medical Center, where she assists with clinical testing and supports efficient lab operations. Fhameda has conducted public health research with the Yale School of Public Health. In her free time, she enjoys going to concerts, trying new food spots, and visiting thrilling amusement parks.

Welcome Week is just around the corner, HC Class of 2030, and today we're introducing another member of your welcome team, Leanna You ('29, SAS/HC). Leanna is an Honors College student majoring in mathematics with aspirations of becoming an actuary. In addition to serving as an Honors Community Mentor in the Honors College community, Leanna also works at the OneStop Accounting Office as a work study student and participates in various cultural clubs and activities. In her free time, Leanna enjoys spending time with friends and family, learning new things, binge watching drama series, and meeting new people.

We’re so proud of you, Evan, for building such a rich and inspiring experience during your time in Taiwan.

Students interested in pursuing a Fulbright or other fellowship experience of their own should connect with the Office of Distinguished Fellowships on campus. The campus deadline for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for 2027-2028 is this Friday, August 15.

Teaching English in Taiwan, studying Mandarin, developing lesson plans with local educators, and taking weekly Chinese dance classes — that's been life lately for Rutgers graduate and Fulbright recipient Evan Charles Keeton.

As he completes his first year abroad, he's gaining firsthand experience in education and cultural exchange while exploring his long-term interests in East Asian dance studies and academia.

Next, we're introducing Rachit Surve, another member of your Welcome Team, HC Class of 2030! Rachit ('29, SOE/HC) is an Honors College student studying mechanical engineering and mathematics, with aspirations of becoming an aviation engineer and working in the defense sector. In addition to serving as an Honors Community Mentor at the Honors College, Rachit is a member of Rutgers Formula Racing, works part-time as an SAT tutor, and has conducted research at NJIT. In his free time, Rachit enjoys playing chess, video games, badminton, and spikeball.
