We're feeling all the first day vibes as classes begin.

"It's the most exciting time of the year for me, watching students from all over the world join our community," says Dean Indy Burke. "They bring new ideas and new perspectives, all in service of a common purpose: advancing knowledge and leadership for a sustainable future."

This year's incoming class is comprised of 16 doctoral candidates and 169 master's students from 23 countries and 35 states and territories. Three-quarters of the master's students, or 130, are in the Master of Environmental Management program; 19 students are pursuing degrees in the research-oriented Master of Environmental Science program; 17 students are enrolled in the Master of Forestry program; and three incoming students are pursuing Master of Forest Science degrees.

New or returning, we're wishing you a fantastic first day and an even better semester ahead.

Carbon markets have a trust problem. Professor Sara Kuebbing and the team at the Yale Applied Science Synthesis Program are working to close it, building the scientific evidence base that carbon credit standards depend on, and bringing together researchers and market practitioners to design solutions people can actually stand behind.

And that's a wrap on MODs. Over the past two weeks, incoming students have participated in Summer Orientation Modules or MODs, a signature start to their time at YSE. From fieldwork in the Yale-Myers Forest to exploring urban environmental challenges in New Haven, students have begun building community and sharpening their critical skills.

A stint as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Madagascar fundamentally changed the way Jamie Mustful sees the world. "It opened my eyes to the incredible impact that agriculture and food systems have on communities, livelihoods, and our future," she says.

She's taking that experience to YSE this fall, where she'll pursue a master of environmental management degree as both a Paul D. Coverdell Fellow and a Bekenstein Climate Leader Fellow. "I can't wait to see where it leads," she says.

Six years after earning his undergraduate degree in environmental studies, Adolfo Castro Dominguez is going back to school to pursue a master of environmental management at YSE. In between, he worked across private-sector consulting, public-sector environmental cooperation, and NGO-led conservation. He sees those roles as united by one question: "How can we build a future where people and nature thrive together?"

This fall, he's looking forward to Conservation in Practice with Professor Vedder and Understanding Environmental Philanthropy with Professor Taylor, alongside coursework in forest finance and carbon markets.

His goal: advancing land protection and ecological restoration across the Global South, starting in regions like Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia, before eventually returning to his home region to continue that work.

Summer White '28 MEM has spent the past few years at Deloitte, where she worked on decarbonizing ground transportation, building out green jobs, and shoring up nonprofits and climate tech startups. It was, she says, "a massive privilege" to work across such varied terrain, but it also sharpened her sense of where she wanted to go next.

At YSE, Summer is turning her full attention to environmental policy, arriving with a set of questions shaped by her years in consulting: Which policy tools actually deliver protection and adaptation that's efficient, equitable, and built to last? How do you align sustainability incentives with the realities of business goals, rather than working against them? And with limited resources, how do you systematically decide where to spend and communicate that prioritization persuasively to the entities that need to buy in?

"I'm feeling blessed beyond measure," Summer says, "and thrilled to have the chance to sharpen my environmental policy skills for what is sure to be a ton of (re)building ahead."
