National Coming Out Day is an annual LGBTQ awareness day observed on October 11 to support anyone “coming out of the closet.”

First celebrated in the United States in 1988, the initial idea was grounded in the feminist and gay liberation spirit of the personal being political.

The founders believed that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silence and ignorance and theorized that once people know that they have loved ones who are LGBTQIA+, they are far less likely to maintain homophobic or oppressive views.

The date of October 11 was chosen because it is the anniversary of the Second National March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights in 1987.

This week for Hispanic Heritage and Q***r History month we would like to highlight:
Isa Noyola:
(July 22, 1978) Is an American transgender (or translatina) activist, national leader in the LGBT immigrant rights movement, and deputy director at the Transgender Law Center. In 2015, she organized the first national trans anti-violence protest. This protest was an event that brought together over 100 activists, mostly trans women of color, to address the epidemic of violence trans communities face. On May 28, 2015 Noyola and 70 other LGBTQ immigrants and undocumented immigrants went tot he Santa Ana police station and formed a human chain to block the front doors as a protest. They were calling for the Santa Ana police to end their contract with ICE and stop further detention of trans and q***r youth in the abusive conditions the Santa Ana police department had created.

We would also like to highlight:

Arley westly:
Is a long time advocate for immigrants, Latinx, and LGBTQ+ communities. She works with numerous organizations in New Orleans to uplift LGBTQ+ youth, stop abuse in ICE detention facilities, and expand access to immigrant support services. Westly, who identifies as a trans-Latinx woman, moved to Louisiana from Honduras at a young age. She is also a vital member of the Southeast Dignity Not Detention Coalition (SDND), a group of nonprofits and grassroots organizations committed to advancing immigrants’ rights through legal and community support service.

LASTESIS is a Chilean interdisciplinary, intersectional, and trans-inclusive feminist collective formed in 2018.
The collective aims to engage feminist theory, or “tesis” (thesis), through art. The name LASTESIS, or “the (feminine) thesis,” derives
from the group’s drive to promote a feminist thesis and theses by feminist thinkers. LASTESIS’s central idea is resistance through experience, with the individual body becoming part of a collective body. Even though they delve into difficult and horrifying subjects (political and sexual violence, femicides, and street harassment), they believe in the importance of celebration and fun as an integral component of resistance.

Lorena Borjas was a Mexican-American transgender and immigrant rights activist, known as the mother of the transgender Latinx community in Queens, NY. Her work on behalf of immigrant and trans communities garnered recognition throughout NYC and the U.S. In 1995, she organized her first march in support of the trans community. Borjas decided to make activism her life’s work. Borjas worked to protect transgender victims of human trafficking, slavery, and violence. She walked the streets seeking women who needed her help, providing condoms and food, and connecting these women to social services.
