The Yale Writers' Conference will be held for the first time from June 12 to June 22. It is an intensive ten-day program intended for committed writers at all levels of experience. Its faculty includes authors such as Tom Perrotta, Julia Glass, Richard Selzer, Kate Walbert, and MG Lord. Workshops, the core of the program, consist of no more than twelve students led by a well-known writer. Each stu

dent is guaranteed an hour-long one-on-one meeting with the workshop leader, who will offer specific criticism of a submitted manuscript as well as more general advice. Every participant has an opportunity to take part in a limited-enrollment master class with a member of the visiting faculty. The program concludes with a full day of panel discussions and meetings with agents, editors, and small-press, journal, and ezine publishers. Students will live and dine in one of Yale’s historic residential colleges and enjoy full access to campus facilities. Visit the website for details on application and fees.

Edward Cooke (YWW ’19) published his book Yankee Slaver, a historical novel released by Paugussett Press. Set in the 1670s, the story follows Vincente, a Paugussett Indian of African and Sephardic Jewish descent, and his mentor Smythe, a veteran boatswain, as they are pressed into service aboard the HMS Kate. Together, they endure the violent "Triangle of Trade" between Africa, the Caribbean, and New York, navigating the physical hardships of the sea and the deep moral agonies of transporting captive human cargo for the Crown.

Described as "Natty Bumppo meets Billy Budd in the shadow of Gustavus Vassa," the novel traces a harrowing journey from the port of New York to the barracoons of the African coast. Through the perspective of the traders themselves, Cooke explores the dehumanization of the trade and the "tyranny of the written word" that would eventually become the seed of America’s original sin.
