SCSU Office of Sustainability The Office of Sustainability is committed to engaging students, faculty, staff and administration to making Southern more sustainable.

(Click "About" for full description) The Office of Sustainability at SCSU connects students, faculty, and staff with the information, people, and tools they need to make our campus more sustainable. We encourage and welcome ideas and participation by the entire campus community, and provide a wide range of opportunities to participate, including Campus Conservation Nationals, Recyclemania, the campus community garden, Plant It Forward, presentations by guest speakers, and much more. The Office of Sustainability also tracks progress toward meeting greenhouse gas and waste reduction goals of the Presidents Climate Commitment.

This weekend, New Haven Solid Waste & Recycling Authority (NHSWRA) is partnering with SCSU to host Hometown Recycling Day. This recycling event is open to anyone with an SCSU ID, as well as any New Haven residents. The event will occur in Lot 9 (Brownell parking lot) from 10 AM to 1 PM. We encourage SCSU students, staff, and faculty to attend this event and recycle any textiles, books, etc. that they no longer need. ♻️

Every week, student workers from the sustainability department collect uneaten food from the dining hall and retail stores on campus (+ vegetables from the community garden). After packaging all of the food, they bring it to Haven’s Harvest— a community partner that distributes the food to wherever it is most needed.

Food recovery interns get the opportunity to make relationships around campus/New Haven, reduce SCSU’s food waste, and make a difference in the community. If this sounds/looks like it would interest you, you should definitely apply for the open food recovery intern position (pinned on our Instagram profile)!

We are looking forward to adding a new member to our sustainability team!

Our Week of Welcome event in the community garden was a huge success! Everyone’s plant pot turned out so cute, and we loved to see students getting creative while enjoying an outdoor campus space. Are you interested in joining our sustainability team? If so, this position may be perfect for you! As a food recovery intern, you would work with others to gather surplus food on campus and deliver it to local food pantries / soup kitchens. You would also be responsible for maintaining records of donations and collaborating on reports describing your work.
