Our mission of educating leaders for business and society infuses all of our programs with a drive for success and impact.

“We believe the most impactful leaders always weigh both sides of the ampersand in our mission—business & society.” —Dean Kerwin K.

More than 300 nonprofit leaders, philanthropists, and students came together at Yale SOM for the 21st annual Yale Philanthropy Conference. 🙌

Led by Isabelle Levenson '26 and three co-chairs, along with a 35-person student team, this year's theme—Adaptation and Opportunity—reflected a sector navigating real uncertainty, but also remarkable possibility. Nine panels covered everything from collective giving and donor-advised funds to AI's role in social impact.

One key takeaway: "There remains enormous value in convening people across institutions, disciplines, and viewpoints to exchange ideas and imagine new possibilities together."

A recent Poets&Quants article explored the updates to our MBA core curriculum, spotlighting Prof. Tauhid Zaman and students from his Generative AI and Social Media course. Beginning this fall, a version of his AI elective will be required for all incoming first-years.

Eunkyoung Im '27 says her experience in Prof. Zaman's course showed her "that AI is not only for students pursuing technology careers. It can matter in education, accessibility, operations, regulation, finance, and almost any field where people are trying to solve real problems."

After nearly a decade working at Korea Hydro Nuclear Power and earning an MBA from Seoul National University, Jinwoo Cho '26 chose Yale SOM's Master of Advanced Management program to become an energy expert with strong business acumen.

His favorite course? Consumer Behavior with Professor Joowon Klusowski: "Her class reinforced the idea that business is ultimately about people. If we want to persuade or influence others, we first need to understand how they think and make decisions. This is something I’m bringing back to my work in Seoul, where I export nuclear energy projects abroad."

Sivagami Lakshmanan '26 reflects on how the Cultivating Conversation Student Fellowship impacted the way she shows up as a leader: "I'm becoming more comfortable naming tensions and slowing down when emotions rise. I want to help groups stay with disagreement long enough to learn from it through digging on the 'why,' rather than rushing to a superficial consensus."

Three lessons she's carrying forward: discomfort is data, listening is an active leadership skill, and understanding the why behind someone's perspective is what unlocks common ground.

Her advice to students considering the fellowship? Come in with humility and curiosity, be honest about where you struggle, and be ready to practice in real, not hypothetical, situations.

Before Yale SOM, Anna George '26 worked for an ocean conservation nonprofit—first as a grassroots organizer, then in executive operations. When she realized she wanted to be a leader in the social sector, she pursued her MBA.

Her time at SOM opened her eyes to new ways of creating change: "Before the MBA program, I was siloed in the nonprofit space and had a fairly narrow view of what impact could look like. Exposure to social enterprises and mission-driven for-profits has shown me how organizations with different structures can help strengthen communities."

Now, she's joining a social impact consulting firm, where she'll continue working in the climate and environment space. Read more about Anna's SOM experience: https://yalesom.io/4e5y22i

The 22nd annual Yale Healthcare Conference—hosted in collaboration with the Yale School of Medicine, Yale School of Nursing, and Yale School of Public Health—brought together clinicians, executives, and policymakers to wrestle with one of the defining challenges of our time: leading through accelerating change.

Co-chair Thaniya Shankar '27, a joint-degree student at Yale SOM and the Yale School of Public Health, shares what it was like to organize the largest student-led healthcare conference in the country and what the day revealed.

"Working at the intersection of public health and business means confronting a system where nothing operates in isolation. Policy shapes trust, trust shapes adoption, and adoption determines whether innovation reaches patients. The hardest part of improving healthcare is not identifying solutions but ensuring they hold when tested in practice."
