Evans Hall has extra visitors this week! 🌎🌍🌏 We're welcoming 66 students from 23 Global Network for Advanced Management schools to campus for Global Network Week.

In our Behavioral Science of Management course, they’ll explore how people think, make decisions, and behave at work—and what that means for managers and leaders. Outside the classroom, they'll tour Yale's campus and explore New Haven's food scene, complete with a pizza night at BAR.

Meet the Master of Advanced Management (MAM) Class of 2027! 🙌

They have earned or are working toward MBAs at 21 institutions in 17 countries, and they’ve worked in 22 countries across six regions. Before Yale SOM, they were at Amazon, Google, Tesla, Alibaba, Mercado Libre, Samsung, BCG, Deloitte, and the Singapore Ministry of Social and Family Development, among others.

Nearly a third have founded or co-founded a company, in areas like AI, cybersecurity, embedded insurance, education, and sustainable consumer products. The class includes pianists, a glass artist preparing their first solo exhibition, a marathoner, and a professional mridangam player who has helped open doors for women in South Indian percussion.

We're glad to have them here at SOM! 💙

Emma Thornton ’27, a joint-degree student at Yale SOM and the Yale School of the Environment, spent her summer at Nike learning how responsible sourcing works inside a massive company with a global supply chain.

Interning in footwear strategic sourcing, she designed a framework for how Nike’s manufacturing network could change over time. She interviewed 30+ people across the company and its footwear value chain, studied competitors and the macroeconomic forces reshaping supply chains, and dug into Nike’s own history.

She also got to explore the stunning Pacific Northwest, attend athlete visits with stars like Alysa Liu, and build a Nike sneaker from scratch at the Bowerman Footwear Lab.

Prof. Julia DiBenigno and Alyssa Menz, an advanced doctoral student at the Yale School of the Environment, have received a Yale Planetary Solutions grant for their proposed research project, “Reimagining the Role of Business in Society: Learning from Organizations that Have Sustained an Authentic Beyond-Profit Purpose Over Time.”

Using in-depth interviews and on-site observations, they will identify organizational approaches that help for-profit firms sustain a genuine commitment to positive social and environmental impacts alongside financial success.

The project team also includes Stuart DeCew, executive director of the Yale Center for Business and the Environment (CBEY), and Vincent Stanley, director of philosophy at Patagonia and resident fellow at CBEY. Together, they will help launch an annual Yale Beyond-Profit Business Conference, which will highlight research findings and best practices across this growing field.

AI is taking tasks off people's plates. But is it taking their jobs?

New research from Prof. Menaka Hampole and her co-authors found that once a task can be automated, it tends to fade from job descriptions. But that often frees workers to focus elsewhere, while helping firms become more productive and expand their workforces.

During Global Network Week, EMBA student Brian Hanlon ’27 joined students from eight business schools to travel the Tapajós and Arapiuns rivers in the Brazilian Amazon. They had no Wi-Fi or cell signal, slept in hammocks, and bathed in the river. Along the way, they stopped at community cooperatives and indigenous villages to study how different business models have transformed the region over decades.

By the end of the week, he had seen three different answers to the question: what is nature for, and who gets to decide?

Congratulations to Prof. John Barrios for winning the inaugural Peter Easton Best Paper Award at this year's Notre Dame Accountancy Research Conference. 🏆

His paper, co-authored with Roman Chychyla of the University of Miami, examined the role of transparency requirements in the academic research process. In 2015, the Journal of Accounting Research (JAR) began requiring authors to share their data and code, while its closest competitors didn't. Prof. Barrios and Chychyla found that JAR papers published after the mandate were easier to read, relied less on hedging language, and reported results more comprehensively.

And despite fears that the rule would scare off ambitious research, the journal ended up publishing more novel work.

Prof. Barrios joined the Yale SOM faculty in 2025. He studies the intersection of labor economics, entrepreneurship, and accounting, with a focus on how regulation and market dynamics shape the choices individuals and firms make.

For Global Network Week, EMBA student Ashley Lewis '27 traveled to Strathmore University Business School in Nairobi to better understand the complexity of doing business across Africa's many economies.

"What stood out most was the realization that doing business in Africa requires a nuanced understanding of local context, relationships, governance, innovation, and culture. There is no single 'African market.' Instead, there are diverse economies, regulatory environments, consumer behaviors, and entrepreneurial ecosystems that demand thoughtful, localized approaches."
