Yale European Studies Council Promotes innovative research on Europe’s past and present in the context of regional and global interactions.

Home to these special programs on Baltic Studies, EU Studies, Hellenic Studies, and Russian East European & Eurasian Studies. The European Studies Council at the MacMillan Center promotes innovative research on Europe’s past and present in the context of regional and global interactions. The Council collaborates with schools and departments throughout Yale to support faculty, students, and visiting scholars by sharing their interdisciplinary expertise on European affairs with the broader public. The Council aims to foster a wider understanding of Europe as both a place and an idea, reflecting the evolving nature of the region and its network of connections throughout the world. The ESC administers the European & Russian Studies M.A. degree program, and we offer students in the University’s doctoral and other professional degree programs the chance to obtain a Certificate in European Studies, by fulfilling a supplementary curriculum. The Undergraduate Major in Russian and East European Studies is administered by the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures. The ESC is also home to special programs in European Union Studies; Baltic Studies; the Hellenic Studies Program, which offers instruction in Modern Greek language, literature, history, and culture; and the Program in Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

On October 16, we are screening Mstyslav Chernov’s 2000 Meters to Andriivka Mstyslav Chernov , a remarkable documentary that asks what it means to measure war in meters, and what is hidden behind those measurements.

Following the screening, we will be joined by Ukrainian veteran and writer Mykola Melnyk and Sevgil Musaieva , Editor-in-Chief of Ukrainska Pravda and a 2026 Yale World Fellow, for a conversation about combat, journalism, testimony, and the difficult work of making war legible to those who encounter it from a distance.

Friday, October 16| Reception at 7:00 PM | Screening at 7:30 PM | HQ L01, Humanities Quadrangle, 320 York Street
Free and open to the public.

Co-sponsored by Ukraine House at Yale , REEES, Yale University Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures , Yale European Studies Council , the Whitney Humanities Center, and Razom for Ukraine

Join us on Friday, October 16, at 4:30 p.m. in HQ 136, as we welcome International Booker Prize-winning Bulgarian writer Georgi Gospodinov, and his English translator Yale alumna Angela Rodel to discuss the power of storytelling.

Can stories really put off the end? Can literature act as a natural antidote to the poison of propaganda? How do visual images inspire and enrich the text within Gospodinov's literary fiction?

This conversation offers insight into the craft of a storyteller the International Booker Prize Jury dubbed “one of the indispensable writers of our times.”

We look forward to seeing you there!

From Palme d’Or winner Cristian Mungiu, a Norwegian woman and her devout Romanian husband relocate with their five children to a remote, close-knit, coastal town. Their teenage children form a fast bond with a neighboring family as unease begins to simmer around their rigid beliefs. When allegations of abuse emerge, they are forced to confront a system of judgment that blurs the line between concern and prejudice. A NEON release.

Admission is free and no registration is required. Please arrive early to secure a seat.

Please join us at 4:15 PM for this conversation between Prof. Mary Sarotte and Michael Kimmage, the Director of the Kennan Institute in Luce Hall

The conversation will focus on the origins of the war in Ukraine, establishing key turning points in the period from the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 to Russian President Vladimir Putin's decision to launch the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It will also address the question of how historians today and in the future will research the origins of this war and of what the twenty-first century archive is likely to be.
