Congratulations to violinist-violist Miranda Werner ’24MM ’26MM on winning a section viola position with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. At YSM, she studied in Soovin Kim’s violin studio and Ettore Causa’s viola studio.

“During my first two years as a violinist, Professor Kim challenged me to think deeply about my artistic choices, and as a result I was able to develop a musical personality that felt both meaningful and genuine,” says Miranda. “Later, Professor Causa taught me to embrace the complex sound world of the viola, and encouraged me to believe in my goals as an artist. The strength of the support system of teachers, colleagues, and friends I was able to create here at YSM has allowed me to adopt a calm, decidedly joyful musical mindset, invaluable to my growth as a performer and artist.”

Commencement may have just been this Monday, but the real celebration began a couple weeks ago with YSM’s annual Honors Banquet.

Awards, aperitifs, and a whole lot of dancing made for a beautiful night!

Yesterday’s Commencement was filled with celebration, loved ones, and a deep sense of accomplishment.

In his address to graduates, Dean Garcia-León reminded students: “You are entering a necessary profession, one that will be more necessary — not less — as the world grows louder and less inclined to sit still and allow people to listen to one another.” 🎓

Congratulations to ZaRiah, winners of the Grand Prize and Wind Gold Medal at the 2026 Fischoff National Chamber Music Association Competition! They join an incredible roster of past winners, including the Miró Quartet, Calidore String Quartet, and Terra String Quartet, YSM’s fellowship quartet-in-residence.

ZaRiah — composed of flutist Ben Smith ’26MM, clarinetist Katelyn Poetker ’26MM, horn player Oved Rico ’25MM ’26MMA, bassoonist AJ Neubert, and oboist Jamison Hillian — is the first wind quintet to win the Grand Prize since 2002. But they’re no strangers to making history: last fall, the ensemble also won the Frances Walton Chamber Music Competition, marking the first time a wind quintet won that competition.

“The competition at Fischoff was unlike anything we’ve ever experienced before. Every time we stepped onto the stage, we felt overwhelmed with gratitude just to be there,” they said. “We want to give special thanks to our mentors at YSM for their unwavering guidance and mentorship.”

Join us in celebrating this extraordinary accomplishment and wishing the ensemble members continued success!

PS — You don’t have to wait long to hear the group in action. ZaRiah is performing alongside piano faculty member Melvin Chen with the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra on May 30.

At last week’s Yale Philharmonia concert, Dean José García-León presented Deborah Borda, former CEO of the NY Phil and LA Phil, with this year’s Sanford Medal in recognition of her service to music and music education.

Borda joins an illustrious group of past honorees, including Yo-Yo Ma, Aaron Copland, and Marilyn Horne.

“Deborah Borda has helped redefine what an American orchestra can be,” said Dean García-León.
