A distinct theme runs through flutist Catherine Ramirez’s ’02MM artistic projects: healing.

“By healing, I mean even those moments when an audience member can feel just a moment of respite, clarity or ease, or a feeling of hope, connection, and possibility,” she says.

Her work is part of a broader Minnesota tradition of music-making shaped by civic engagement, solidarity, and the pursuit of change.

Last month, at the first Ellington Jazz Series concert of the season, artistic director Thomas C. Duffy presented Jeff Fuller ’67BA ’69MM with the Ellington Medal, YSM’s highest recognition of achievement in jazz.

A bassist, educator, and composer, Fuller has enjoyed a prolific career, performing alongside jazz luminaries including Lou Donaldson, Paquito D’Rivera, and Dizzy Gillespie.

First awarded to the Duke Ellington Orchestra in 1972, the Ellington Medal recognizes exceptional contributions to jazz and music education. Past recipients include Marian Anderson, Eubie Blake, George Coleman, Lou Donaldson, Jesse Hameen II, Roy Haynes, Bessie Jones, Charles Mingus, Odetta, Max Roach, and Mary Lou Williams.

Last week, we gathered for “When the Earth Speaks,” an immersive multimedia performance exploring our changing planet through music, photography, and conversation.

Presented in collaboration with Yale Planetary Solutions and the BarTur Photo Award, the performance paired new works by Jaebong Rho ’26MM and Forrest Eimold ’24MM ’30DMA — made possible by the Pinover Prize — with striking photographs capturing the impacts of climate change.

The works were performed by the Vista String Quartet and followed by a panel discussion moderated by Julie Zimmerman, Vice Provost for Planetary Solutions, and featuring Jennifer Marlon, Executive Director of the Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions, and Anthony Acciavatti, the Diana Balmori Assistant Professor of Architecture.
