As we welcome students back to campus this week, we're looking forward to another inspiring year of music-making by listening to the Yale Philharmonia's performance of the iconic Beethoven's Fifth Symphony from last year! Yale will honor conductor and arts advocate Gustavo Dudamel, Music and Artistic Director of the New York Philharmonic, with the Henry E. Howland Memorial Prize, one of the university’s highest honors.

Dudamel will be in residence at Yale Nov. 16 to 20 for public events and conversations with Yale students and the New Haven community.

The residency will culminate on Thursday, Nov. 19, with the presentation of the Howland Prize by Yale President Maurie McInnis and a public performance by the Yale Philharmonia at Woolsey Hall under Dudamel's direction and in tandem with Grete Pedersen, principal conductor of Yale Schola Cantorum.

Tickets and livestream details will be announced by the Yale School of Music and the Yale MacMillan Center.

Every summer, we have the privilege of hosting students entering grades 5 to 12 in New Haven Public Schools on our campus for a free, month-long intensive Morse Summer Music Academy! In this video, YSM student Roy Heng '27MM, program director Rubén Rodríguez, and New Haven public school students share what this experience has been like for them.

The Morse Summer Music Academy is a program of the Music in Schools Initiative, which is supported by a gift from the Yale College Class of 1957.

Congratulations to Juan Pedro Garcia Oliva '25MM '26MMA '32DMA for winning the concerto prize at the Virtuoso and Belcanto Festival! As part of the award, he will have the opportunity to perform as a soloist with orchestras across Europe.

"Being a YSM student means receiving support in all aspects of life and is an ongoing process of change and development as an artist, which couldn’t be possible without the guidance of my teachers Boris Berman and Wei-Yi Yang," said Garcia Oliva. They guided me through the preparation process, and I couldn’t be more grateful."

Nahre Sol '27MM is exploring how to capture an "American sound" through music.

Sol is this year's Musical Bridges commissioned composer at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, and her work, titled "Dust and Clover," grew from a deep dive into musical traditions spanning cowboy songs, Appalachian fiddle tunes, Mexican corridos, Indigenous music, Black cowboy work songs, spirituals, early blues, and more. Her piece will premiere at the festival on Aug. 8. In a Q&A with YSM, Sol discussed her process and her time at Yale.

Sol joins an impressive roster of past Musical Bridges composers including Vijay Iyer, Juhi Bansal, Angel Lam, and Daniel Bernard Roumain.

After a 45+ year career as a music critic, educator, and consultant on classical music’s future, Sandow turned to his deepest artistic calling: composition.
