In Magnifica Humanitas, Pope Leo XIV names human arenas in which we need to be on guard against the potential of AI to reduce the human person to data as a “cog in the machine.” On Monday at 5:30pm, Albertus will host a Justice Panel in which Albertus faculty and a student respondent will explore the impact of A.I. in these areas:

Join us for a meal and dialogue in our new dinner conversation series: Being Human in a Dehumanizing Age.

Human dignity faces many challenges today, including dehumanizing systems and ideologies, technologies that disengage and divide us, and situations of war, environmental degradation, and poverty. Guided by Christian intellectual traditions and the Catholic, Dominican values of contemplation and action, we will explore how to rediscover our humanity and seek flourishing for all. We will be joined by talented scholars who will not only share their research but also engage us in dialogue.

We are thrilled to welcome Sister Mary Catherine Hilkert to campus next week!

When students in Albertus' "Contemporary Christian Theology" course are invited to share which reading from the semester they find most helpful, many of them name the chapters we discuss from Sr. Hilkert's "Naming Grace."

In that book, she discusses how naming the presence of grace in the world helps us be changed by it. She writes, "Naming grace is no small matter. Bringing a deeper dimension of human life to awareness and conscious responsibility has serious implications. A change of perception or worldview is essential to a radical change of life" (47).

On the side of Rosary Hall, there is a quiet path that is lined with memorial and commemorative trees leading to a shrine to Mary. Two of those trees were planted to honor those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 and their families.

As the country observes twenty-five years since that terrible day, we set out a flower beneath one of those trees. I found myself thinking about the first responders who run toward danger to serve others.

The Dominican Blessing ends with this petition: "May the angel of peace watch over us and lead us at last to the reign of God." On this day of remembrance, may we support the first responders and peacemakers who work toward a more just and peaceful world.
