🎉Congratulations to PhD students Lisa Beyeler-Yvarra and Tom Zhuohun Wang, who are among the 31 recipients of the 2026–27 Rome Prize and Italian Fellows Program, awarded annually by the American Academy in Rome. The fellowship supports innovative work in various disciplines across the arts and humanities.

Lisa, a PhD student in and the Department of Religious Studies, was awarded the prize for her research on the spatial politics of the largest non-state landholder in the world: the Roman Catholic Church.

Tom, a PhD student in the Departments of History and Classics, was recognized for his research on the way that ancient cities across the Roman Empire managed their finances.

The Rome Prize provides artists and scholars with dedicated time, space, and a transdisciplinary community in which to advance their work within the city of Rome. 🇮🇹 Fellows will reside and work at the academy’s 11-acre campus on the Janiculum Hill for periods ranging from five to 10 months, beginning in September 2026.

🎉Congrats to alum Hadas Dabas ’25 PhD (Genetics), one of 32 early career researchers named as a 2026 Schmidt Science Fellow. The program allows emerging research leaders to pursue an ambitious “interdisciplinary pivot” by embarking on postdoctoral research in a new field of study from their PhD.

Dabas will pivot to climate science, with a focus on engineering fungi to create self-sustaining biological carbon sinks to combat climate change.

From his earliest days, Dalton Meyer ’25 PhD (Earth and Planetary Sciences), knew he wanted to be a paleontologist. While dinosaurs 🦕 were his first love, his curiosity led him to study mosasaurs, a group of giant lizards that evolved to become marine. A serendipitous meeting with a Yale researcher brought him to New Haven for his PhD studies.

In December, his dissertation was among the 40 awarded distinction, an honor given when all readers unanimously recognize the work as outstanding scholarship. The Graduate School conferred 197 PhD degrees in December.

In a new Q&A, Meyer talks about how he unraveled a mystery in the evolutionary family tree of lizards and the importance of collaboration.
