We lost a couple of big trees in the weekend storm. All of the wind plus three months of more than double our normal rainfall provided conditions to uproot these majestic giants. Our tree crew is out today clearing the paths. Please avoid the west side of the Arboretum pond Tuesday and Wednesday.

The Connecticut Invasive Plant Working Group's 2026 symposium From Awareness to Action - Strengthening Our Response to Invasive Plants will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 at UConn Student Union, Storrs, CT.

We are proud to have Connecticut College Arboretum's Director, Maggie Redfern, and Horticulturist, Anna Fialkoff, presenting a session this year on "Building Layers for Biodiversity with Native Plants."

🎙The symposium will be recorded and made available after the event. Attendees can choose to attend in person or purchase the recording. In person: Register by Tuesday, Oct. 13. No walk-ins.

🌳Sessions include education on a variety of techniques for management of terrestrial and aquatic invasives, as well as restoration with native alternatives.

This past Saturday, the Connecticut College Arboretum was proud to team up with the Connecticut College Women's Rowing Team, volunteers from Save Ocean Beach, students from Mitchell College and Save the Sound to pick up trash at Ocean Beach Park and remove invasive plants (mugwort) from the Alewife Creek trail as part of the International Coastal Clean-up weekend. We are saddened to announce that Kathy Dame who worked for the Arboretum for twenty years has passed. Kathy returned to college after starting a family and graduated from Conn in 1990. She loved working at the Arboretum, especially managing educational programs and working closely with the Arboretum’s volunteers. She was also a founding member of the Connecticut Mountain Laurel Chapter of Wild Ones. Her work brought together several things she valued deeply: education, people, and the steady, grounding presence of the natural world.

Howdy Y’all! We’ve had some reports of an outlaw ‘round these parts, especially on the state champion tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima) by Williams School. If you happen to see a spotted lanternfly, please stomp, smash, or get rid of it however you will.

Spotted lanternfly is an invasive insect first spotted in America in 2014, and are incredibly dangerous for woody plants. They can lay eggs almost anywhere before first freeze, and shift appearance frequently from June to November. They feed on tree sap, promote growth of dangerous mold, and heavily stress trees.

You can’t spell street without a tree in the middle! Returning Camels might notice new street signs throughout campus - some of which have tree names, chosen by our own Arboretum Director! In this new series, we thought we could take a look at how these streets got their names :)

The road encircling campus is now called the Elm Loop Rd, and how fitting! Conn’s first seal featured an elm tree, and they were one of the first trees on campus - Professor Caroline Black ordered 100 (for $1 each!) in 1921 to line our major roads.

While most of these trees were lost in the 20th century due to Dutch Elm Disease, a fungus that wiped out 77% of US populations by 1989, this one at the Williams St entrance is likely original, as confirmed by imagery in the archives.
