This pride month, consider the southern magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) - when its flowers first open, it is functionally female (image 2), with curling pistils ready for pollination - then, overnight, the flower closes before reopening male, shedding its stamens to fertilize a newer flower.

Buzz on over and check out the Laurel Walk! It is one of the most floriferous years for our mountain laurels, both in the cultivated and the natural areas. They should be blooming for another week or so but don't delay.
