Introducing this year’s teaching team at the Center for Anatomic Movement Sciences!

Under the guidance of Professor Dimitri Papadopoulos, our teaching team supports BME and SCEN students in the cadaver lab, creating hands-on opportunities to explore anatomy, develop fine motor skills, and connect human anatomy with medical engineering.

These unique experiences give our undergraduates the opportunity to learn beyond the classroom, build valuable skills, and gain a deeper understanding of the human body and its role in medicine and engineering.

Congratulations to Dr. Lili Shi on the successful defense of her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University!

Her dissertation explored multimodal ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging to characterize placental molecular expression, microstructure, and vascular properties during preeclampsia.

Bringing back our BME Student Summer Highlight series!

Meet Lyla Biggs (BME ’27)! This summer, Lyla worked as a Product Development Engineering Intern at Resolution Medical, where she got hands-on experience in medical device development through testing, design, manufacturing, and documentation. She designed and 3D-printed test fixtures, supported quality system efforts, and contributed to testing and ISO 10555 compliance activities for catheter delivery systems.

Outside of her work, Lyla enjoyed exploring the Twin Cities and getting to know her fellow interns and colleagues. She’s excited to take these experiences with her as she continues pursuing a career in MedTech!

The Tulane BME Department is incredibly proud to celebrate the Class of 2026 and all they have accomplished during their time at Tulane. From presenting their year-long capstone projects and receiving their Order of the Engineer rings to earning academic honors and making meaningful impacts through leadership, research, service, and student organizations, this class has truly embodied what it means to be an engineer.

Over the past four years, these students have gone above and beyond both inside and outside the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on the Tulane BME community through their innovation, resilience, creativity, and compassion. We are excited to see them continue to grow as leaders and changemakers in industry, research, medicine, and beyond.

Calling all students, alumni, faculty, and friends. Our dedicated Dr. Ronald Anderson is retiring, and we’d love your help celebrating his impact on Tulane BME. Since joining Tulane in 1987, his engaging and humorous lecture style has kept students inspired, while his research and mentorship have helped shape generations of engineers. Tulane BME will truly miss having him around and wishes him all the best in this next chapter.

Last week, the BME seniors presented their year-long team design projects at the Engineering Capstone Design Expo, where students, faculty, professional engineers, and guests had the opportunity to explore innovative solutions, engage with teams, and learn more about each project’s design process and final prototype.

This year featured six outstanding design teams, each showcasing impressive creativity, technical skill, and human-centered problem-solving in biomedical engineering. From problem statement to prototype, it was inspiring to see this generation of engineers deliver thoughtful, innovative presentations that sparked meaningful conversations at every poster and prototype.

Congratulations to all of our seniors on completing this major milestone. A special shoutout to Breastie for receiving the Audience Choice Award and to Lullabi Tech for earning the Judges’ Choice Award. We are incredibly proud of your dedication, growth, and accomplishments, and we cannot wait to see where your talents take you next.

We are proud to recognize Olcaytu Hatipoglu, a senior Biomedical Engineering student-athlete minoring in Electrical Engineering from Edirne, Türkiye.

Olcaytu holds two school records in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays, earned two AAC Conference gold medals in 2025, and was named Most Improved Athlete in Spring 2024. She is also an Athletic Conference All-Academic Team honoree and represented Türkiye on the Turkish National Team for six years.

Academically, Olcaytu is completing an Honors Thesis on AI-augmented structured illumination microscopy for prostate cancer diagnostics and was recognized as the Most Distinguished Intern following her Vanderbilt Biophotonics and Engineering Internship this past summer. She plans to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering after graduation.

Congratulations, Olcaytu. We cannot wait to see what you accomplish next.

On October 31st of the fall 2025 semester the Center for Anatomical and Movement Sciences (CAMS) hosted a visit from spine surgeon Dr. Sina Pourtaheri, who was accompanied by representatives from medical device company Atec Spine

Dr. Pourtaheri is a native of New Orleans. He attended medical school at Tulane University and has authored over 45 journal articles; 4 book chapters and speaks regularly in the spine surgery circuit. Biomedical engineering students enrolled in Professor Dimitri Papadopoulos’ Anatomy and Physiology laboratory course quickly filled up the twelve allotted spots, and were able to gain tremendous insight into how the anatomy that had been learned over the course of the semester is crucial in being able to understand how orthopedic surgeries are performed, as well as to understanding how the design of instrumentation and implants work. The CAMS lab and the BME department want send our sincerest gratitude to Dr. Pourtaheri and the Atec representatives for the hours spent with our students, which will surely translate into them becoming more capable engineers and clinicians.
