Happy Hispanic and Latin Heritage Month!
This month, we’re celebrating the cultures, traditions, and backgrounds that make our sisters who they are! It’s important to recognize and celebrate the contributions of Hispanic and Latin communities, honor the traditions that have been passed down through generations, and continue creating spaces where everyone feels proud of their heritage. Now more than ever, we want to celebrate the diversity, history, and cultures that make these communities so special!
Get to know our sisters as they have shared their favorite traditions, what their heritage means to them, and what makes them proud of their culture!
Ana Camila is Puerto Rican 🇵🇷, and when asked about her favorite cultural tradition, she shared:
“My favorite tradition from my culture is that Puerto Rico has the longest Christmas in the world! For some people it starts on November 1st and for others (like my family) it starts the Friday after Thanksgiving and lasts all the way until the middle of January when las fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián are celebrated. Throughout the island you can hear Christmas music everywhere, restaurants are serving lechón and people go around celebrating the Christmas spirit by saying to each other ‘Felicidades’ everywhere they go.”
Rebeca is Brazilian 🇧🇷, and when asked what her heritage means to her, she shared:
“To me, Latin heritage is a lot of my identity, it has shaped my morals and my way of life. To have Brazilian heritage means to value the importance of diversity and community, being Brazilian has taught me to open my home to everyone for food, celebration, and real friendship. It makes me proud to be open about my roots and what it means to be a Latina and a first generation American in the present day U.S.”
Both Maria and Sophia are Honduran 🇭🇳, and they shared a little about what their heritage means to them!
When asked how she celebrates her heritage, Maria shared:
“I celebrate my Hispanic heritage by spending time with my family! My favorite tradition is making food with my grandma during Christmas. It means a lot to me since I am able to learn about my family history and spend time with her. Something
