Our Summer Teacher Professional Development Series is going strong! With 3 PD's already behind us, we have hosted 74 teachers from 36 unique schools.

Using robotics in the classroom is the focus of our LEGO Spike Prime PD. Teachers learned how to write code using Scratch, explored ways to incorporate the program into their curriculum, and learned about competing in FIRST Lego League competitions.

In our MissDelta PD, we learned about the social and environmental impacts of the 1927 Mississippi River Flood as its 100 year anniversary approaches. We used models, computer programs, and hands on activities to explore the phenomenon that led to the flood. Then we discussed the social and societal impacts of the disaster with Dr. Brooke Grant, Senior Professor of Practice and social studies educator.

In our Teaching the Future PD, we explored the basics of computer science and talked about how we can embrace the use of technology in our classrooms. Our students are being raised in the era of AI, so we spent time with Dr. Nicholas Mattei and Dr. Aron Culotta discussing the history of AI, its ethical use for our students, and how we as teachers can find tools that help us in our classrooms.

Thank you to the Tulane faculty that took part if our professional development, to the STEM Library Lab and Jean Lafitte National Park for hosting us, and to all the amazing teachers who signed up! See y'all next time!

๐Ÿš€ Houston, we have a Crawfish!
Big news from the final frontier (and our own backyard)!

Through Tulane Universityโ€™s K-12 STEM Outreach program, over 150 middle schoolers from across New Orleans competed to design the official ISS Mission 21 patch. Students from Holy Cross, Benjamin Franklin, St. Edward the Confessor, and John Curtis Christian Schools brought their A-game, blending science with local spirit.

After a tough judging round by Tulane students and faculty, we have a winner!

Congratulations to John Tran from Holy Cross School! Mentored by teacher Tara Lavender, Johnโ€™s winning design features a "Space Ambassador" crawfish decked out in iconic Mardi Gras purple, green, and gold. Keep an eye outโ€”New Orleans culture is officially heading to the International Space Station! ๐Ÿ’œ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›
