Who is a Xavierite who exemplifies what it means to serve? 💛🤍

The Victor H. Labat Alumnus of the Year Award honors a Xavier University of Louisiana alumnus whose faithful, dedicated service and support to the University reflects the legacy of its namesake, Victor H. Labat.

For more than 45 years, Mr. Labat served Xavier in various capacities, including as the University’s first Director of Alumni Affairs. He was a dedicated servant, community leader, and positive example of what it means to be a Xavierite.

Now, it’s time to recognize a Xavierite who carries that same spirit of service forward.

Celebrating a Xavierite whose legacy continues to make an impact.

The Los Angeles Unified School District honored Dr. George J. McKenna III, ’61 by renaming Middle College High School the Dr. George J. McKenna III Middle College High School.

Dr. McKenna, a Xavier University of Louisiana alumnus and longtime educator, became nationally known for his work as principal of George Washington Preparatory High School, a story later portrayed in the 1986 film The George McKenna Story, starring Denzel Washington.

The renaming ceremony brought together former students, educators, community members and supporters to recognize Dr. McKenna’s contributions to education and the Los Angeles community.

Xavier’s Office of Alumni Relations and members of the Southern California Alumni Chapter were proud to be present for this historic occasion.

Happening Today: Middle College High School in Los Angeles County is being renamed the Dr. George McKenna III Middle College High School in honor of his legacy as a distinguished educator and advocate for student achievement.

Representatives from Xavier’s Alumni Office are present to celebrate this momentous occasion and will share highlights from today’s renaming ceremony.
