Happy 250th Birthday, America! One of our great symbols is the Statue of Liberty, a gift from the people of France to the United States, and designed by French sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi. It was proposed in 1865 by French political thinker Édouard René de Laboulaye to commemorate the Franco-American alliance during the American Revolution and to celebrate the abolition of slavery in the U.S. The internal iron framework was engineered by Gustave Eiffel, who later designed the Eiffel Tower!

The holiday's name, first used in the 1890s, is a portmanteau of June and nineteenth, referring to June 19, 1865, the day when Major General Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the American Civil War
