Making connections and making moves toward what’s next. 💼🌊

360 students checked in at the Tulane School of Science and Engineering Career Fair, eager to connect with employers and pursue internships and jobs. Tulane alumni were among the company representatives, returning to campus to meet the next generation of talent.

Thank you to the employers, alumni and students who made it a successful afternoon of conversations and connections. We can’t wait to see where those introductions lead!

At Wave Weekend, pick up your SSE Discovery Passport at the check-in tent outside Lindy Boggs Center. Visit department stations, watch a Makerspace demo, chat with Capstone teams, and join an Ask Me Anything session to collect stamps along the way.

Collect at least five stamps and return to the check-in tent to claim a prize. 🎁

Congratulations to Jianwei Sun, professor of physics and engineering physics, on being named a Fellow of the American Physical Society! 🎉

Sun was recognized by the APS Division of Computational Physics for developing the SCAN density functional, a method used by researchers around the world to predict how materials behave. Fewer than 0.5% of APS members are elected as Fellows each year.

His work continues with the Genesis Mission, where he’s leading a Tulane team using AI and quantum-mechanical simulations to speed the search for higher-temperature superconductors.

New Orleans in a Changing Environment: From Lessons Learned to Lasting Resilience

Leading scientists, engineers, policy thinkers, and cultural scholars will gather on Tulane’s Uptown Campus to explore New Orleans as a living case study in coastal risk reduction. Topics include sea-level rise, storm-tide behavior, the Hurricane Surge Risk Reduction System, funding uncertainty, and how Hurricane Katrina shaped New Orleans’ music scene.

From collecting water samples from the Mississippi River as a Tulane undergraduate to modeling sediment movement across more than 57,000 U.S. reservoirs, Abigail Eckland’s career has always followed the river.

The 2018 Tulane graduate, who earned a B.S. in Environmental Earth Science, recently returned to the department through the McWilliams Seminar Series, sharing research published in Nature Communications and explaining why decisions made far upstream can shape the future of coastal Louisiana.

Her journey is also a powerful example of where undergraduate research and faculty mentorship can lead.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t just asked around for research opportunities,” Eckland said.

Join us for an evening on the water's edge. 🌊

Climate writer Mary Annaïse Heglar (Troubled Waters, The World Is Ours to Cherish) and environmental humanities scholar Tori Bush (co-editor of The Gulf South: An Anthology of Environmental Writing) come together for Writing the Water, a conversation on storytelling and environmental change.

Through short readings, conversation, and audience Q&A, they'll explore waterways, flooding, the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927, and how stories help us understand the Gulf South's environmental future.
