According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), employment of social workers is expected to grow 6 percent between 2024 and 2034, faster than the national average for all occupations. This demand spans many areas of the profession, from clinical support for individuals to community advocacy and systems-level change.

Mental health challenges are often discussed in everyday language: stress, burnout, anxiety, sadness, trauma. But when do these experiences become something more clinically significant? Psychopathology helps mental health professionals better understand patterns of mental and behavioral distress and support people through complex mental health challenges.

For students preparing for clinical or community-based social work practice, understanding what psychopathology is can provide important context for recognizing and responding to mental health challenges. A Master of Social Work (MSW) degree program can help students develop the psychopathology assessment, intervention, and advocacy skills necessary to support individuals and communities.

After attending the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) California Annual Conference in 2025, Chelsea Taber-Cory decided she could do more to shape the organization’s mission of advancing the social work profession and supporting members in their career development and social work practice.

In 2026, she was elected to lead committee nomination and leadership identification efforts for NASW California.

In her new position, she empowers other social workers to take on leadership roles, fostering conversations about the impact individuals can have on the social work profession. Though her personal background is in school social work, Taber-Cory’s experience in Tulane’s Doctor of Social Work program showed her the importance of insights from professionals in a vast array of social work practice areas.

To her peers in California and across the nation, she has just one message: “Your voice matters.”

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Leia Saltzman as Tulane School of Social Work’s new Associate Dean of Research!

In 2025, Dr. Saltzman founded the Public Engagement, Accessibility, and Research Literacy (PEARL) Lab, which engages both undergraduate and graduate social work students in science communication and program evaluation efforts.

Through creative initiatives like Social Work Zines and educational programming that connects students to faculty, PEARL Lab teaches students to analyze and synthesize research. In her new role, Dr. Saltzman plans to continue to build a research culture that transforms the way students think about scholarship.

I had the opportunity this week to speak with the Advanced Integrated Clinical and Community Practice II class at Tulane University’s School of Social Work.

It was a great conversation about advocacy, public policy, and how social workers can create change… not just one person at a time, but by changing the systems that affect people’s lives.

I’m always grateful for the opportunity to spend time with college students. Their curiosity, thoughtful questions, and desire to make a difference give me hope for the future. Thank you Dr. Moncrief for the invitation!
