Please join us in celebrating Ms. Patricia Morris, a 1971 alumna of our Master of Social Work program! 🎉

Over the span of a more than four-decade long social work career, Patricia has worked with people experiencing mental illness, substance use disorders, intellectual disabilities, domestic violence, homelessness, poverty, and health crises.

But her most recent chapter began in her own home — after her retirement. After facing the overwhelming, often isolating task of caring for her ailing mother, Patricia founded the all-volunteer nonprofit Hands of Hope Caregivers Foundation. The organization began in small church congregations and now serves more than 80 caregivers in Prince George’s County, Maryland.

Now, Hands of Hope provides support groups, educational programming, one-on-one counseling, and advocacy, with a particular focus on African American women over 50 caring for aging parents or spouses.

Her commitment to service earned her Tulane School of Social Work’s Ellen Gates Starr Service Award in 2025. We are honored to recognize social workers like Patricia who truly . 💚🩵

The United States is facing more disaster situations each year, with less time between them to prepare for the next. According to Climate Central, 2025 was the third-highest year for billion-dollar weather and climate disasters, just behind 2023 and 2024. Between 2023 and 2025, the United States went fewer than 20 days between billion-dollar disasters.

The psychology of disasters can be broken down into four phases: pre-storm, heroic, disillusionment, and reconstruction.

The psychology of disasters typically follows predictable steps, from the pre-storm stress response through to a returning sense of normalcy. A strong disaster resilience plan helps communities recover quicker and more fully. When communities have the tools to combat both the mental and physical challenges of disasters, they face fewer long-term mental health complications and find their feet faster.

Tulane School of Social Work’s Master of Science in Disaster Resilience Leadership (MS-DRL) is the only program in the U.S. with a focus on FEMA’s National Disaster Recovery Framework. Graduates have gone on to be essential resilience leaders, working across government agencies and non-profits to help struggling communities rebuild.

According to Climate Central, a nonprofit group of scientists and journalists who report on climate, the United States has had 426 climate disasters costing at least $1 billion since 1980. The highest number of billion-dollar disasters occurred in 2023, with 2024 and 2025 coming in second and third.

As these disasters increase in frequency, disaster risk reduction becomes even more essential.

Disaster risk reduction consists of the processes and policies established to protect communities from disasters’ negative impacts. Organizations such as the United Nations’ Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) work to prevent new risks from arising, reduce existing risks, and increase communities’ disaster resilience — their ability to recover when disasters occur.

A master’s degree in disaster resilience leadership helps the professionals who work in this field develop better plans for a future with less fallout from disasters.
