Introducing an incredible alumna... Kelly Sharkey!

Sharkey received the 2025 Tulane School of Social Work Alumni Association Recent Graduate Award for her commitment to justice and dignity in both the housing and healthcare systems.

Before Kelly Sharkey began her dual Master of Social Work and Master of Public Health, she was supporting housing recovery efforts in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. That experience, she says, was foundational to her understanding of the systems that connect health, housing, and opportunity.

Now, Sharkey serves as the Director of Programs and Communications at Humanities Foundation, a South Carolina-based nonprofit affordable housing developer that provides sustainable resident and community services throughout their Southeast housing portfolio. When she's not working or taking care of her two children, she's advocating for reproductive justice — which she says is an extension of her social work practice.

For a decade, Dr. Catherine O'Connor has been hosting meals in Mississippi as part of her Weaving Healthy Families (WHF) research project, a culturally grounded program created with and for Indigenous communities to reduce harmful alcohol and drug use and strengthen wellness from the inside out.

In one year, adults who took part in the initiative reported declines in hazardous drinking, alcohol use disorder symptoms and ma*****na use, while youth also showed measurable decreases in alcohol and drug involvement.

The program is rooted in history. Many Indigenous communities continue to experience the effects of settler colonialism, including forced relocation, cultural disruption and intergenerational trauma, alongside present-day economic and health inequities, O’Connor said. Rather than focusing on individual behavior alone, WHF considered family relationships, cultural practices and community strengths. This approach was intentional from the start.

Researchers say the program works by strengthening “protective layers” such as family cohesion, communication, cultural identity and social support that make healthier choices more sustainable.

This spring, Tulane recognized Dorothy "Dottie" Reese’s decades of impact by honoring her with the 2026 Scott Cowen Service Award at the 52nd Annual Tulane Alumni Awards Gala. The award celebrates alumni whose exceptional volunteerism and service strengthen the university and its community. For Reese, the recognition reflects more than 40 years of mentoring Tulane students and alumni while championing service across New Orleans and beyond.

Reese is a licensed social worker who received a dual Master of Social Work ('79) and Master of Public Health ('80) from Tulane, then built a career that has crossed industries and institutions. She began in hospital social work, helping build social work departments and patient-centered programs designed to improve patient care and advocate for underserved populations.

Her full career journey spanned medical social work, program management, and organizational DEI trainings — plus volunteering, activism, and community engagement in her spare time. Read more: https://tssw.tulane.edu/news/dual-degree-alum-receives-service-award
