Please join the upcoming Sociology Colloquium, where Verónica Zubillaga, Richard E. Greenleaf Scholar-in-Residence, will present a talk titled "The Landscape of Violence in Venezuela: Women's Everyday Responses to Armed Actors in the Maduro Era."

Dr. Zubillaga is a Venezuelan sociologist and was a professor at the Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas until 2024. For more than two decades, her ethnographic research has examined the social dynamics of urban violence in Caracas with a particular focus on inequality, structural violence, youth subjectivities, gender practices, state violence, parastate armed actors, and strategies deployed by residents of poor and working-class neighborhoods in Caracas, especially mothers, to navigate the presence of guns and armed actors in their everyday life.

We had a great time at the first Café y Pastelitos of the series! This week, we welcomed Gretel Acosta, Visiting Assistant Professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, who shared her experience moving from Cuba to the United States and reflected on how this journey has shaped her personal and academic path.

A recent Tulane graduate and one of our many former student workers, Gretel offered a meaningful perspective on the connections between migration, identity, and academic work.

Next on the series is Jocelyne Ponce, Visiting Scholar at the Middle American Research Institute, who will join us on Thursday, October 8 at 11:00 a.m. Stop by 100A Jones Hall, we will have café and pastelitos!

Art History and Latin American Studies joint PhD student Sarah Brokenborough will speak at the Newcomb Institute on Friday, October 9, about her research on embroidery and her work as curator of the exhibition "Quiet Reserve: Stitching an ambitious new woman," currently on view at the Newcomb Art Museum.

Sarah has dedicated her work to the study of needlework education in the US and the Caribbean. Don't miss this lecture, where you will learn more about her impressive research and the exhibition.
