Iona University proudly announces the appointment of Lucille Bootman ’17 to its Board of Trustees, effective July 1, 2026. A passionate advocate for the Iona community, Bootman brings both deep institutional knowledge and a dynamic career in strategic communications to her new role. Since 2022, she has served as the Young Adult Trustee, a role that gave her firsthand insight into the Board’s impact.

“We are delighted to welcome Lucille in this new capacity as a member of the Board of Trustees,” said Iona President Seamus Carey, Ph.D. “As a young alumna who has remained actively engaged with the University, she brings an important perspective and a genuine passion for supporting our students and strengthening the future of Iona. We are grateful for her dedication and look forward to the many contributions she will make as a Trustee.”

At Iona University's 82nd Commencement Ceremony, Princeton University professor and acclaimed author D. Graham Burnett, Ph.D., delivered a thought-provoking keynote that challenged graduates to see education not merely as an achievement, but as a lifelong practice rooted in humility, curiosity and human connection.

"But real education is true and earnest and humble striving with others for understanding. And real education like that makes us free. Permits us to walk on water. That kind of education does not stop when you come up here today and get your degree. Because that kind of education is the work of a lifetime, the work of love, of care. And of genuine stretching beyond yourself toward others and toward the goodness of the world."
