One bud open, 10 more to go!
Bartzella Itoh paeonia.
I left the house for a couple of hours and came home and it was open. If only I could have watched it.
The plant is 3.5 feet tall and the flower is 7” across.

The deer decided they can just jump right over the electric fence.
We now have to fence each of our apple trees individually or install a 12 foot fence.
They stripped the Golden Delicious and the Arkansas black, and almost pulled down the Black Oxford trying to get the upper branches, bit off branch growing tips.
Disheartening at best.

This ‘Bartzella’ yellow Itoh paeonia is going to burst at any moment!I can’t wait to see it 😄

Update on the elderberry we cut down.
Last year during the drought, our 10 foot tall 30 foot long elderberry hedge started dying. There just wasn’t enough water to go around. I figured we had to cut the tops in order to save them. We cut the whole thing down to around 18 inches and I held my breath for the winter.
Today every one has started to grow back and are hip high.
These are probably four or five years old, so have good systems and are obviously very resilient!

I don’t care if it’s 85° out!
I’ve been waiting three years to make this asparagus soup recipe, given to me by my friend Shirley, with my own fresh asparagus!

Yes I did it again!
Every year actually, we cover crops with row cover to keep out garden enthusiasts like ground hogs, cucumber beetles, potato bugs, cabbage moths and so on 😁
We wait for the plants to emerge then cover ASAP!
Even though road cover is porous and will allow some rain to get through, I often will take time to remove the cover if rain is expected to let the plants get a good drink.
The cover will last for years if you are gentle with it.
For crops that need pollination in order to produce such as winter squash and cucumbers, we leave the row cover in place until the plants start to flower. By then the plants are big enough to handle the insect pressure.

This is such a sweet blueberry plant.
The variety is ‘Cabernet splash ‘ if I remember right.
I bought it at a random nursery to test it out. I overwintered it in the pot in my garden to test its hardiness. There was some winter kill but not a lot.
I keep it in a container on my porch and really enjoy seeing it there. It is supposed to only get about 3 feet tall.
It’s blossoming now so as long as it got fertilized by my other bb bushes, it will be producing berries!
