Touro's Graduate School of Education was officially established in 1993 and, today, is among the largest schools of education in the state of New York. Our enrollment draws on the constantly-evolving urban community of New York and reflects an extremely diverse student body, including students from all over the world. Consistent with Touro's mission, the School of Education remains solidly committed to high quality universal education. Our goal is to offer exemplary programs and to graduate outstanding students prepared to provide superior future leadership in the field of education. In addition to serving traditional full-time graduates who have recently completed their undergraduate degrees, Touro’s Graduate School of Education supports the academic needs of applicants who are already employed and who desire to upgrade their professional preparation or obtain additional credentials. Therefore, evening, weekend, and online classes are offered to accommodate the needs of working professionals. The School of Education, the largest in the Division of Graduate Studies, is dedicated to excellence in education for a rapidly-changing education environment. In order to provide school districts and other educational agencies with highly professional and competent teachers, administrators, and educational personnel, every effort is made to maximize the quality of our programs. To this end, the School continues to strengthen its internal systems for supporting the high performance of both students and faculty; develop new programs that can effectively meet the contemporary needs of schools – especially those serving high-needs and diverse student bodies; and expand the School's collaboration with a wide range of national and state stakeholders in education. “ My goal is to create a safe space where students feel valued, respected, and empowered to succeed.” 💙
Meet Leotha Andrew, a Touro University Graduate School of Education School Counseling master’s candidate and Holmes Scholar whose commitment to student well-being guides her journey toward becoming a school counselor.
As a paraprofessional with the New York City Department of Education, Leotha sees how challenges with organization, time management, and emotional regulation can affect students’ learning and confidence. Her goal is to help students strengthen these skills, build resilience, and develop greater independence.
With a bachelor’s degree in psychology from SUNY Empire State College, Leotha brings a foundation in understanding people and a passion for building meaningful relationships. She also plans to pursue a second master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling to deepen her ability to serve students, families, and communities.
“The Holmes Master’s Scholarship Program will support my growth as a future counselor and leader,” she shares.
Leotha’s dedication reflects the promise of Touro’s Holmes Scholars Program: supporting aspiring education professionals as they develop their leadership and prepare to make a meaningful difference.

Meet Max Tholenaar-Maples, a member of Touro GSE’s eighth cohort of Holmes Scholars for 2026–2027! 🎓💙

An educator and musician, Max is pursuing an M.S. in General and Special Education (Grades 1–6) while teaching at a public elementary school in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

During five years as a teaching artist with Musical IQ, Max brought interactive music and science programs to students across the Tri-State area. Those experiences showed him how meaningful learning can change lives in any setting.

Becoming a full-time classroom teacher deepened that understanding. As Max taught English, math, and social studies, his students taught him how to respond to their needs in ways that help them feel respected and empowered.

“I want to use everything I have learned at Touro, combined with my knowledge as a teacher and parent, to create and reinforce educational environments that allow every student to learn, thrive, and feel empowered.”

As a Holmes Scholar, Max looks forward to expanding his knowledge and sharing what he learns with aspiring educators. We’re proud to welcome him to this year’s cohort! ✨

Human Creativity, Inspired Teaching, and Multilingual Learning 📚✨

Last week, Dr. Jasmin Cowin, Associate Professor of TESOL at Touro University’s Graduate School of Education, presented at at Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida, near Orlando.

With the theme “Back to the ELT Future: Human Creativity Beyond AI,” the conference brought together English language educators, researchers, administrators, and advocates from Florida and around the world to explore human innovation and connection in an increasingly AI-driven world.

Dr. Cowin’s presentation, “Equipping Teachers to Support Multilingual Learners Through Science of Reading Infographics,” showcased her innovative approach to empowering teachers through carefully designed infographics filled with insights to support multilingual learners.

“Thank you to for an amazing conference in a really outstanding location,” Dr. Cowin shared.

Thomas Troisi, Assistant Professor of School Leadership at Touro University, led a training for Nassau BOCES Center for Professional Development attendees exploring the responsibilities and challenges of instructional leadership.

Together, participants took a deep dive into teacher supervision and evaluation and reviewed current research on effective instruction.

“My thanks to Nassau BOCES for hosting the event and supporting my ongoing work with principals and other school leaders,” Professor Troisi shared.

🌟 Growing as educators. Making a difference for children.
Through the Touro GSE Office of Clinical Practice, our candidates gain valuable classroom experience alongside dedicated educators.
At P.S. 169, Touro GSE candidate Jessica Linde and lead teacher extraordinaire—and Touro alum—Louis Barnett help create a rich learning environment where K–2 children can learn, grow, and build independence.
Jessica is completing her final semester in our Birth–Grade 2 general and special education program. With a background primarily in special education, she brings a passion for teaching young children and supporting their growth.
“I am truly grateful to my graduate program and the experiences it has given me,” Jessica shares. 💙
Louis also reflects on the impact of his Touro education: “I am grateful for my experience at Touro! I learned various strategies to implement in my practice as a teacher!”
Together with paraprofessionals Alavel Cartwright and Allen Francisco, they nurture children’s creativity, enthusiasm, and willingness to participate through explicit instruction connected to life skills and real-world experiences.
Their clinical supervisor, Karen Glazer, celebrated 10 years of supporting Touro teacher candidates this September. Her guiding beliefs capture the heart of this classroom: “We teach children, not lessons,” and “For children to be successful, they must experience success.”
👏 Congratulations to Jessica as she completes her final semester, and thank you to Louis, Karen, the classroom team, and the Office of Clinical Practice for supporting future educators and helping every child experience success!

Meet teaching candidates Julia Mikhailov, Julia Dereka, and Illya Martsenyuk, assigned to the P.S. 370 Jim Thorpe School elementary program at P.S. 100 The Coney Island School in Brooklyn! 🍎

We are excited for our candidates as they learn alongside students and experienced educators. Each day in the classroom brings opportunities to build relationships, deepen their practice, and discover the impact they can make as teachers.

They are supported by Touro GSE clinical supervisor Prof. Barbara Sanders (third from right) and cooperating teacher Juanita Pryce (second from right).

For more than a decade, Ms. Pryce has welcomed Touro graduate students into her classroom, mentoring nearly 50 future educators. She gives candidates meaningful opportunities to work with students one-on-one and in small groups, then offers thoughtful coaching that helps them grow in skill, confidence, and professional judgment.

We salute Ms. Pryce for her years of service in District 75, her care for each student’s learning and social-emotional growth, and her generous commitment to the next generation of teachers. What does a TESOL curriculum assignment look like at ? 👀

Meet Jacqueline Shaffer, a candidate in our M.S. in TESOL program and a middle school Spanish teacher in Brooklyn. In EDDN 635, Curriculum Development and Classroom Management in the Technology Era, she created a curriculum map connecting learning goals and assessments with the supports multilingual learners need to participate and succeed.

Jacqueline used Microsoft Copilot to explore ideas, then checked and revised its suggestions against standards and established ESOL practices.

"Through this assignment, I learned how important it is to design a curriculum that includes clear supports for multilingual learners, so they can access grade‑level content, participate in discussions, and show their understanding through reading and writing. I realized that scaffolds like visuals, sentence frames, and bilingual resources aren’t optional, they’re essential for equity. This process helped me see how thoughtful planning can make learning more inclusive and meaningful for all students," Jacqueline shared with us.
