'Take Your Child to Work Day' looks a little different at NYU Courant...

Yesterday's national celebration was meant to give children a glimpse of the working world, and that's exactly what we did!

Many thanks to our friends in Lerrel Pinto's Robotics Lab and Leif Ristroph's Applied Mathematics Lab for their hands-on demonstrations. 🦾🧮

Vlad Vicol, Professor of Mathematics, and Theodore Rappaport, Professor of Computer Science, are among the 2026 Fellows elected to the American Academy of Arts & Sciences. Congratulations!

Founded in 1780, the Academy is one of the nation's oldest and most esteemed honorary societies societies—celebrating leaders from academia, the arts, business, and public affairs.

Professor Vicol was "honored and humbled" by his election this year. He works in the field of nonlinear partial differential equations, focusing on models arising in fluid dynamics.

Professor Rappaport, who also serves on the faculties of the Department of Computer Science & Engineering at NYU Tandon () and the Department of Radiology at NYU Grossman School of Medicine (), is a pioneer in radio propagation, channel modeling, and millimeter wave technology.

“The founding of the nation and the Academy are rooted in the inextricable links between a vibrant democracy, the free pursuit of knowledge, and the expansion of the public good, ”said Academy President Laurie Patton. You can read more on NYU News at the link in our stories.

We were honored to mark the creation of the new Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science at our Celebration Symposium on February 20th.

Gérard Ben Arous, Inaugural Dean, Georgina Dopico, University Provost, Evan Chesler, Chair of the Board, and Juan de Pablo, Executive Vice President for Global Science and Technology, spoke to Courant's historic legacy and exciting future.

Linda Mills, NYU President, expressed her gratitude to the school's faculty and staff and her commitment to NYU’s strategic emphasis on science and technology. Then two distinguished members of our faculty presented on their research—Hong Wang, Professor of Mathematics, spoke about her recent breakthrough solution to the Kakeya set conjectures while Kyunghyun Cho, Professor of Computer Science and Data Science, spoke about the potential applications of AI in healthcare.

Thank you to everyone who made this symposium possible. It was a great event, and we'll be sharing more recaps in the coming weeks!
