With 6 days left in our Countdown to Class, we wanted to give our soon to be new students a warm welcome for their first week at AUA starting with the 3-day orientation.

In case you were wondering what orientation might be like, here is an overview of what you’ll experience this weekend:

On Friday, September 5th you’ll have a 2 hour campus tour that begins in the AUA lobby and a business expo in the conference room spanning all day.

Saturday will include the campus welcome, a message from our Provost, panel discussions with our service departments, and team building.

To round everything out on Sunday, you will join in on a chat with our alumni, information about our curriculum, a student panel, and…wait for it…a tour of Antigua (We KNOW you’ve been waiting for this one 👀)

Enjoy orientation, be proud of yourselves, and keep a look out for more about AUA during your first week of classes on our socials.

"Medical school is what you make of it. AUA will give you the opportunity to pursue your dream careers, but success comes from staying disciplined, seeking out mentors, and taking ownership of your learning. Stay consistent with your studying, use available educational resources wisely, and lean on your peers for support." - Dr. Matthew Simpson, MD, class of 2021, to the current and soon to be students at AUA. Dr. Simpson, MD is a Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellow at Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr. Simpson is also the founder and CEO of Top MD LLC, an award winning academic support company dedicated to empowering medical students and recent graduates, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. Prior to this, Dr. Simpson graduated from his internal medicine residency. Through his work with Top D LLC, he has mentored and tutored hundreds of students nationwide, helping them excel on USMLE exams, match into competitive residencies, and succeed in their medical careers. Dr. Simpson is passionate about leadership, community outreach, and promoting diversity and inclusion in health care. Both this passion and his hard work has earned himself the 40 under 40 Top Physicians Award, the 2025 Young Physician Award , and the 2024 Resident of the Year award. We are so immensely proud of Dr. Simpson and his dedication to following his dreams as well as all of our current students putting in the work to do the same. In Dr. Simpson's words, we are 💪

Meet Dr. Kevin Haas, a 2009 graduate of AUA, who currently works as the Associate Program Director for Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship and Clinical Medicine at Jesse Brown VA Hospital.

Dr. Haas chose AUA because it "has established clinical rotations in the US which offers the potential to make connections for residency." During his time studying, Dr. Haas stated he remembered "making new friends and enjoying the island" the most.

As for advice for future students, Dr. Haas suggests "There are no quick shortcuts - adapting and grinding will get you to your goals."

We are so proud of Dr. Haas and all of our alumni here at AUA.

If Dr. Haas inspires you, feel free to check out our next application workshop on 9/2 to see how to apply at AUA!

American University of Antigua and Sickle Cell Foundation Donate Critical Testing Kits to Sir Lester Bird Medical Center

St. John’s, Antigua — The American University of Antigua (AUA) College of Medicine, in partnership with the Sickle Cell Association of Antigua and Barbuda (SCAAB), has donated an additional year’s supply of HemoTypeSC sickle cell testing kits to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center (SLBMC). This donation builds on AUA’s and SCAAB’s ongoing efforts to expand early childhood detection and long-term management of sickle cell disease (SCD) in Antigua and Barbuda.

Present for the handover were Mr. Vernon Solomon, Senior Vice President & COO (Antigua) at AUA; Dr. Edda Hadeed, SCAAB President; and Dr. Shivon Belle-Jarvis, SLBMC’s Medical Director.

Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder causing abnormal red blood cells, which can lead to severe pain, anemia, and life-threatening complications. Each year, about 4–5 babies in Antigua and Barbuda are born with sickle cell disease, while approximately 10–14% of newborns have the trait. Around 18% of the country’s population are carriers, raising risks for couples who are both trait positive.

Mr. Solomon underscored AUA’s commitment, saying:
“Since the program’s launch, hundreds of families have benefited from free newborn screening, giving Antigua and Barbuda’s next generation the knowledge to safeguard their health, make informed decisions, and seek early care when it matters most. And we want to ensure that this goes on for generations to come or until a cure is accessible to all.”

Since the start of the program in 2020, over 4,700 newborns have been screened, enabling families to receive early interventions and ongoing support. With continued collaboration, AUA, SCAAB, and SLBMC are dedicated to further reducing the impact of sickle cell disease through early detection, education, counseling, and prevention.

Meet Dr. Surita Banerjee, graduate from the class of 2017 at AUA.

Dr. Banerjee works at Radiology Regional, a private practice in nuclear radiology medicine in Florida. Prior to, Dr. Banerjee spent several years as the Resident Physician for Nuclear Medicine at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, NY.

A standout student at AUA, Dr. Banerjee was named Best Outgoing Medical Student and was an AUA Gold Medalist during her time as a student. She chose AUA for a number of reasons. “You actually get trained in a medical curriculum affiliated to the US. You receive first hand experience and training on how to master the USMLE’s."

In addition to her work, Dr. Banerjee has contributed to a significant amount of research early on in her career with over 10 publications she has headed up or contributed to.

Asked what advice she would give to a future student, Dr. Banerjee states, “Be resilient. Even on the tough days. It’s easy to give up or give into the ‘I’m not good enough,’ but remember that you made it this far and you can do it!”

Dr. Banerjee is a proud alum and another great example of what students can accomplish through AUA. We congratulate Dr. Banerjee and look forward to continuing to follow her career.
