Congratulations to Sergeant D. Gatling on his well-deserved promotion!

Darnell has built a career defined by service and impact. From the work he has done with Blue Chips, to the relationships and legacy he built during his time in Community Affairs, he has consistently found ways to make a difference both on the job and in the communities he served.

He was a phenomenal Police Officer, an outstanding Detective, and we have no doubt that he will bring that same commitment, heart, and leadership to his role as a Sergeant.

Some careers are about the stats. Others are about the impact you leave behind. Darnell’s record speaks for itself.

Thank you for being a leader with courage, and understanding that you can be Black and Blue at the same time. You’ve never abandoned your true identity and have been able to aggressively fight crime while not abusing the community.

This week, we proudly recognize Police Officer Julie Gelin, whose journey reflects dedication, perseverance, and a commitment to service.

As the first-generation child of Haitian parents, Officer Gelin has always been driven by a passion for education, public service, and making a positive impact in her community. In 2013, she earned a Bachelor’s degree in Criminology and Political Science from Hofstra University, establishing the foundation for a career devoted to justice and service.

In 2020, Officer Gelin joined the New York City Police Department and began serving in the 79th Precinct. Committed to professional growth and advancing the field of criminal justice, she was selected in 2025 for the highly competitive OPD Scholarship Program to attend the University at Albany School of Criminal Justice—an opportunity awarded to only two NYPD members annually.

Throughout the program, Officer Gelin distinguished herself through academic excellence and a dedication to advancing criminal justice research and practice. Her achievements earned her the prestigious Dr. Walter M. Francis Award for Excellence in Master’s Study, recognizing outstanding achievement among graduating master’s students.

In May 2026, Officer Gelin proudly earned her Master of Arts in Criminal Justice, adding another milestone to an inspiring journey of hard work, determination, and service.

As a New York City Police Officer, Officer Gelin continues to demonstrate that a commitment to public service extends beyond the uniform. Through her pursuit of higher education and professional excellence, she exemplifies the dedication, discipline, and perseverance that strengthen both the profession and the communities we serve.

There are leaders who hold a position, and then there are leaders who truly leave an impact. Capt. Veniece Gayle has consistently led with presence, accountability, and a genuine commitment to both her members and the community she serves.

As she is promoted to Deputy Inspector on May 28, 2026, this moment feels earned in every sense of the word. From Jamaica to growing up in the Bronx to commanding one of Manhattan’s precincts, her journey reflects hard work, resilience, and leadership that speaks for itself.
