Our research assistant spotlight for the month of February is Nicole Zhou!

Nicole is an undergraduate senior studying Applied Psychology at NYU. Her current interest in research includes social and industrial organizational psychology. She is particularly interested in topics surrounding Asian Americans and LGBTQ+ individuals.

Her favorite hobbies include learning more about random topics of interests she happens to stumble upon and hanging out with friends (virtually at the moment due to the pandemic).

A lasting memory Nicole has in the lab is the first time she made a phone call to contact a potential participant for recruitment, she was very nervous at the time. But now, she is glad she overcame that fear and became slightly braver.

Below is a mindful breathing exercise we shared with some of our participants:

1. Keep your back vertical and maintain a comfortable sitting position.
2. Feel where your body is in contact with the floor, chair or cushion.
3. Move your attention to your lower abdomen and feel the changes in your lower abdomen while inhaling and exhaling.
4. Pay attention to the feeling of how your belly slightly expands when you inhale and slightly shrinks and drops when you exhale.
5. No need to control your breathing, just breathe naturally.
6. No matter how many times you are distracted, just bring your attention back to your breathing again and notice the constant changes in your lower abdomen.
7. When inhaling, tighten your muscles for about five seconds; when exhaling, slowly relax for about fifteen seconds; from this, you can experience the difference between tightness and relaxation. Repeat this twice. After you have relaxed, you can sit still for a while.
