NYC Opera College Series of lectures called "Life on stage" will tackle the following topics:
Singing when tired or sick:
This is a reality for every single singer when having to sing an audition or important masterclass while tired or sick, to singing a major debut, to having to attend a rehearsal while very jet-lagged. We believe that for our singers to be prepared for life in the opera world, we must pass the knowledge of our career singers on faculty on how to deal with these tricky and stressful moments, as well as come and have guests come and give their tips and answer questions.
Rehearsal and Theater work Etiquette:
Our Singers on faculty as well as guests will give talks and discuss the topic of rehearsals in theaters etc, at length. The hierarchy in the rehearsal room can be tricky to navigate, and yet is extremely important. How to relate and work with conductors, Directors, as well as anyone in between such as the costume department, and coaches is important terrain to know your way around.
How to plan to warm up and what to do when there is no time, and more. We will feature special guest appearances from conductors, Agents, and other professional singers to educate our students and singers with the knowledge that is vital for their success on the road, and with their colleagues.

NYC Opera College presents a course which teaches the singers the common and rare voice types, how to discern them, and how to cultivate the ear. This course will serve a very important role in the singer's ability to know and monitor their own instrument as it develops, as well as their choice of repertoire.
Determining your voice type and appropriate repertoire is a big subject and can be overwhelming, with so many opinions coming at you from left to right. We will approach this subject by guiding you through the understanding of “tessitura”, How to tell all the different voice types apart from each other, as well as all the different types within each category. For example, within the voice type of “Soprano” are more specific types, such as “Lyric Soprano” “Coloratura Soprano” “Dramatic Soprano” etc. Each category is a guide to choosing your repertoire and career path, however, should never be stiff categories that can make a singer feel trapped. Each singer’s instrument is unique and special, therefore some can dip into roles in categories uncommon to them. For example, some dramatic Mezzos can also sing lyric mezzo repertoire (Giulietta Simionato as Cherubino), and some Coloratura sopranos can sing the Lyric repertoire (Lily Pons as La Traviata). Sometimes, however, experimenting with a repertoire unusual for your voice type can prove dangerous and unsuccessful. This course will give you the tools to help you know your instrument- even as it changes- in order to make the right choices for your present repertoire and future path.
