In honor of Pride Month, NYSID is recognizing historical figures whose lasting contributions have shaped the world of design. ✨

Today, we’re spotlighting pioneering interior designer Elsie de Wolfe, often regarded as America’s first decorator. After beginning her career as an actress, de Wolfe became one of the first professional women interior decorators, with clients including Henry Clay Frick, Anne Harriman Vanderbilt, and the Duke and Duchess of Windsor.

Known for transforming dark, ornate Victorian interiors, she introduced lighter French-inspired palettes. De Wolfe lived and worked with her life partner, Elisabeth Marbury, and together they renovated homes, leaving a lasting mark on the design industry.

🌿 In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, NYSID is highlighting traditional eco-friendly design practices rooted in Asian and Pacific Islander cultures and their continued relevance in contemporary sustainable interiors.

🏡 Courtyard-centered design, seen in traditional homes across China, India, and other parts of Asia, is a passive cooling strategy that promotes natural ventilation, daylight, and a strong connection to nature. These open-air spaces act as the heart of the home, helping regulate temperature, improve airflow, and create a sense of calm and community. Today, this approach continues to influence modern interiors through biophilic design, indoor-outdoor transitions, and sustainable spatial planning.

🪟 Perforated window screens demonstrate a shared approach to passive cooling across several AAPI cultures in warmer climates. Traditional Chinese lattice windows, Japanese koshi windows, South Asian jaali screens, and Middle Eastern mashrabiyas all support continuous airflow and diffused sunlight while providing privacy. Each style is rooted in local materials, craft traditions, and aesthetics. Today, interior designers often apply similar principles to partition rooms without using solid walls, introducing texture and pattern while maintaining airflow, light, and privacy.
