Skull and Circle Honor Society (St. John's University)

Skull and Circle Honor Society (St. John's University) Membership into Skull and Circle is regarded as the highest honor St. John’s College can bestow upon a student. Tap Day is tradition in its finest sense.

Members pride themselves on employing rigorous standards when selecting their successors. Thus, the new members are regarded as the highest honored representatives of academic excellence, moral character, and campus and community dedication. For the one chosen “Head Skull,” it is an exceptional honor. The members are selected through a lengthy and arduous review process. Key elements in determinin

g a member’s integrity and maturity are their letters of recommendation and application essays. Members possess a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.50 and have been carefully judged by the current membership to have enhanced the life of the University through their campus and community commitments. The secrecy and ritual that accompany the ceremony reflect the great care that enters into the selection of the new members. Selecting or “tapping” the new members publicly amongst the campus community, as opposed to private notification, serves to fully recognize their accomplishments by the University and to inspire others to reach the same high standards.

This afternoon, the current members informed me that they have agreed on their selections after an arduous week-long review of all the applicants. Complicating matters, we received more applications than in any of the last 25 years, yet the Skulls scrutinized each one with the same intensity and interest to ensure everyone got a fair and thorough review. I am happy to report that nine new members have been selected for membership, eight students and one honorary member.

Those selected were informed earlier this evening as part of a virtual Tapping Ceremony. Those not chosen for membership should not be discouraged. Your academic accomplishments and contributions to St. John's and the greater community did not go unnoticed and made the selection process that much more difficult. On behalf of the Skull and Circle Honor Society, I wish you nothing but continued success in your future endeavors.
