The Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development at New York University. Our faculty are intellectually adventurous and socially conscious.

NYU Steinhardt offers a broad range of undergraduate and graduate programs in education, health, the arts, and media studies. Our school has a long history of connecting theory to applied learning experiences through dozens of affiliations and partnerships with urban institutions, building communities within and beyond our classrooms, and nurturing the human spirit. Our students study in the expansive environment of a great research university, and use the urban neighborhoods of New York City and countries around the world as their laboratories.

Meet the 2026 Spirit of Steinhardt Alumni Award honorees: three remarkable alumni turning their values into action and creating meaningful change in their communities and beyond.

From championing young people to reimagining education, this year’s Ascending Champion, Disruptor of the Year, and Steinhardt Visionary reflect what it means to lead with purpose, innovate with intention, and strive for excellence.

🏆 Steinhardt Visionary: Francisco Núñez (BS ’88, Music Education), Founder of the Young
People’s Chorus of New York City, transformed his passion for music education into a lifelong
mission to champion the creativity and potential of young people.

🏆 Ascending Champion: Nico Victorino (EdD ’20, Educational Leadership), Principal of PS
150 in Lower Manhattan, transformed his commitment to academic excellence and belonging
into a thriving school community where every student has the opportunity to blossom.

🏆 Disruptor of the Year: Claudia Espinosa (EdD ’23, Leadership and Innovation), has built her career around empowering young women through mentorship, health education, and opportunities to thrive academically and professionally. As founder of the L.O.V.E. Mentoring Program, she champions a holistic approach to student success that supports the whole person.

Their work reminds us that the spirit of Steinhardt doesn’t stop at graduation, it grows wherever our alumni make a difference.

The 78th annual Emmy Awards celebrated some of television’s most creative and accomplished talent, including three NYU Steinhardt alumni whose work helped bring this year’s winning productions to life.

Remembering, reflecting, and growing together.

Twenty-five years after September 11, 2001, Dean Patten joined NYU President Linda G. Mills, State senator Senator Brian Kavanagh,State Assembly member Grace Lee, University leaders and deans, and community members to honor those we lost, reflect on the lasting impact of that day, and recognize the resilience of the people and communities who carried one another through its aftermath.

Through words, remembrance, and the simple act of planting together, we marked this anniversary with an eye toward the future. Daffodils and purple asters now take root alongside our 25th Anniversary Tree, a living reminder that even in moments of profound loss, there is space for hope, connection, and renewal.

We remember. We honor. We grow together.
