Practice Spotlight: Karolína Gogoláková

Karolína Gogoláková is unafraid to introduce herself and ask questions, making her well-suited to a focus in her MPH studies on Health Policy and Management. In addition to her recent internship, Karolína contributes to the NYU GPH Journal of Public Health Disasters, where she aims to write accessible, evidence-based articles on public health policy, global health governance, infectious disease preparedness, and climate-related disasters. Karolína also enjoys exploring New York City, trying new restaurants with friends, and traveling.

NEW 🎧 - EP185 Investigating Chemical Exposures in Nail Salons with Brooke Rezvani and Annabelle Swigert

In this episode, we speak with Brooke Rezvani (BS '26) and Annabelle Swigert (BS '26) about their interdisciplinary research project, "Chemical Exposures in Nail Salon Workers in the US". Brooke and Annabelle detail their fieldwork investigating the occupational hazards faced by salon workers across local New York City neighborhoods, focusing on volatile organic compound (VOC) exposures, and examine the long-term health outcomes of these exposures, ranging from respiratory irritation to reproductive health risks and miscarriages. Their research also highlights the systemic barriers that leave this vulnerable workforce unprotected.

This conversation highlights how GPH’s faculty mentorship, teaching excellence, and location in NYC empower undergraduate students to look beyond "band-aid solutions" and investigate root-cause public health challenges on both local and global scales.

In Focus: ***co is More Popular Than Ever. Now What?

To***co use is the leading cause of preventable death worldwide. While 80 percent of the world’s 1.3 billion to***co users live in low- and middle-income countries, very few of these countries offer research-backed programs and support that could help people to quit, according to a new article led by Prof. Donna Shelley.

Through case studies from India and Vietnam, the paper illustrates how local social norms, unique to***co use patterns, regulatory environments, and health care systems vary by region, and as a result, dictate access to and success of to***co cessation.

Prof. Shelley notes that a one-size-fits-all approach won't work—but there are effective, scalable strategies such as quitlines and access to medications that have been shown to help people quit.

In Focus: What Comes Next for ?

SNAP, the federal food assistance program, provides a critical safety net for families—but about 20% of SNAP dollars are used to buy sugary drinks and unhealthy foods.

While only Congress can change which foods are eligible under SNAP, research by Prof. Jennifer Pomeranz shows that in 2025 alone, more than half of states took action to try and remove soda and candy from the program. As a result, the USDA granted 23 states waivers to test these changes and collect data—but in June, a federal judge struck down the waivers.

Prof. Pomeranz discusses what's behind these state actions, and what comes next for SNAP.

In this episode, we speak with Cheyenne Sewell (MPH '25) about the power of interpersonal communication and qualitative research in public health. Cheyenne discusses her transition from an anthropology background into community health science, highlighting how public health extends beyond the numbers to embrace human stories and build rapport with local populations. During her fieldwork in Dr. Moon Howard’s Assessing Community Health Needs course, she collaborated with the Southeast Queens Residential Environmental Justice Coalition (SQREJC) to conduct door-to-door surveys on ongoing flooding issues. Cheyenne reflects on balancing a rigorous academic schedule with two part-time jobs at NYU Tandon and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, emphasizing the importance of clear communication, study groups, and faculty mentorship. Looking toward the future, Cheyenne shares her passion for maternal health and her work toward becoming a certified postpartum doula through DONA International. This episode highlights how GPH's flexible academic pathways and location in New York City empower students to translate classroom learning into hands-on field experience and community advocacy.

Seiya Sachdeva: Building a Future the 4+1 Way

When considering colleges, Seiya Sachdeva thought her goal to support vulnerable communities through policy change would best be served with a degree in law. So how did she end up enrolled in NYU GPH’s 4+1 program, pursuing a combination BA/MPH? No longer pre-law, and having completed her bachelor’s from NYU Gallatin with a major in cognitive science and public health this spring, Seiya aims to earn her MPH in epidemiology from GPH in the next year and eventually to become a physician.

An Intentional Pioneer: Adolf Kofi Awua, PhD, MA '22

Adolf Kofi Awua came to public health through an unconventional path. "As a biochemist in Ghana I was focused on the development of protocols for the molecular identification of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which causes cervical cancer,” he said. “However, the samples collected in the field by public health professionals weren’t meeting the necessary quality criteria to do lab workups. I felt the need to understand what the issues were in sample collection; that drew me out of the lab and into the field with the epidemiologists."
