🎉 Celebrating Dr. Nikolaus Sauer, DNP, CCRN, CRNA! 🎉

We are incredibly proud to recognize Dr. Nikolaus “Nik” Sauer on graduating this month from Columbia University’s DNP Nurse Anesthesia program and becoming a CRNA! 💜

Originally from Minnesota, Nik is a proud member of the NYU Meyers Class of May 2018. He began his nursing career at the main campus of the Magnet-designated Mount Sinai Hospital, where he excelled as an ICU nurse and quickly distinguished himself through his clinical excellence, leadership, and dedication to patient care.

During his time at NYU Meyers, Nik was known for his perfect class attendance, active involvement in extracurricular leadership, and contributions as a guest lecturer in the undergraduate nursing program. His commitment to growth, mentorship, and professionalism continues to inspire the next generation of nurses.

His advice for nursing students:

“Be in the moment and give your best where you are at, you never know what doors will open down the road when you do that. Prioritize the things which will help you stay grounded and refueled, after all it’s a marathon not a sprint. After school, remember your ‘why’ as you begin your nursing career. Keep that motivation and your goals before you while enjoying each step along the way!”

Nik’s journey is a powerful reminder that hard work, humility, and purpose can open extraordinary doors. We are so proud of you and excited to see the impact you will continue to make in nurse anesthesia and beyond!

May is Mental Health Awareness Month

✨ NYU Men in Nursing Alumni Spotlight ✨

Meet Ryan Higgins-Dodd, BSN, RN, Class of January 2023, now working as a psych mental health nurse at Holy Hills Hospital in North Carolina. 💜

“I enjoy being a psych nurse because every day is an opportunity to support, encourage, and advocate for people during vulnerable moments in their lives.”

Ryan also shares this advice for nursing students:

“What has helped me stay successful in nursing school is having peers around me who I can rely on when trying to learn a new concept. Sometimes our peers can explain things in a way that makes more sense than reading about it.”

From the classroom to compassionate mental health care, Ryan continues to embody the heart of nursing through advocacy, connection, and support. We are proud to celebrate his journey and the impact he is making every day.

💜 Giving back, one blood pressure check at a time!

On May 14, students from NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing proudly participated in the Wellness Fair hosted by University Settlement in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Organized by Prof. Fidelindo Lim, the Meyers team provided blood pressure screenings and health education focused on healthy eating and cardiovascular wellness.

From practicing clinical skills to connecting with community members through compassion and education, our students demonstrated what nursing is all about — service, advocacy, and care beyond the classroom.

We are proud of our future nurses for showing up with knowledge, kindness, and a commitment to improving community health. 🩺❤️

The Power of Nurses 💙 | Nurses Week (May 6–12)

Meet Cole Lukaszcyk, BSN, RN, NYU Meyers alumni and Leonard Castillo, class of May 2026.

Cole says: “One of my favorite parts about being an ICU nurse is using critical thinking skills to navigate difficult situations—both clinically and interpersonally. Every shift in the Surgical ICU challenges me to think quickly, adapt, and provide the best care possible for my patients.”

But caring for patients is only part of what we do. We also care for their families and loved ones during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. Sometimes, the most meaningful part of nursing is being a source of reassurance, compassion, and calm when people need it most.

Cole adds: “As a nurse in the Surgical ICU at Mount Sinai Hospital, I’m reminded every day of this year’s Nurses Week theme: The Power of Nurses. Our impact goes far beyond the bedside—it’s in the trust we build, the support we provide, and the lives we touch every single day.”

Leonard, graduating this month from NYU, had the opportunity to learn from Cole. He plans to kick start his career in the ICU and other high acuity units.

Happy Nurses Week to all the incredible nurses and especially to the men in nursing who continue to lead, care, and inspire.

✨ Nurses Week NYU Men in Nursing Spotlight ✨

Meet Jonathan Zhou, BSN, RN — NYU Meyers alumnus, Class of January 2026, blood donor, now caring for critically ill patients in the Medical ICU at NYU Langone Health.

From student to ICU nurse, Jonathan brings curiosity, compassion, and a commitment to lifelong learning into every patient interaction.

💬 Advice for current students:
“Stay curious and never be afraid to ask questions. Nursing school and clinicals are where you learn, grow, and build confidence, and no one expects you to know everything right away. Every question you ask is an opportunity to become a safer, stronger, and more compassionate nurse. Lean on your classmates, support one another, and trust the process.”

💙 Growth starts with curiosity—and great nurses are built one question at a time.

The Power of Nurses 💙 | Nurses Week (May 6–12)

Kudos to our role model nursing student and blood donor, Justin Butron, class of May 2026.

Recently, Justin saved someone’s life. Here is his story:

“I witnessed a person suddenly collapse. At that moment, I realized I was the only one with healthcare training—and I knew I had to act. I started chest compressions, applied the AED, directed someone to manage the airway, and had another person document the time.”

“Everything I’ve learned at NYU Meyers College of Nursing came rushing back—ACLS protocols, ICU shadowing experiences, and the mock codes we practiced. Those moments gave me the confidence to step in without hesitation.”

“We performed five rounds of CPR before we finally got a shockable rhythm. Soon after, he became responsive, started breathing on his own, and had strong, palpable pulses. When I asked if he knew where he was, he shouted, “I’m FINE!”—a moment I’ll never forget.”

“I stayed with him, reassuring him and those around him until the paramedics arrived. Later, I found out the person I helped is doing well and will soon be discharged from the hospital.”

“As I prepare to graduate, I carry this experience with me. This is what The Power of Nurses looks like—being ready when it matters most.”

Congratulations Justin! We are very proud of you. You will continue to save lives - as an RN and as a blood donor!
